I am 10 weeks out of TKR and have had so much pain with it, especially at night, and today it started burning on the inside of my knee like fire. My issue is there is only a few pain medications that they can give me due to severe allergy’s to a lot of them and I am also on blood thinners that makes it hard to find other options for inflammation
Hello @dke7, Welcome to Connect. Most of the problems I had early on with my TKR was because I was not doing the rest, ice and elevate enough. I was doing it several times a day but my surgeon told me I wasn't doing it enough. The icing and elevating many times during the day instead of the 2 or 3 times a day really helped me. Also, I'm a side sleeper and had to sleep on the side with my good leg or my back. Using a small pillow in between my legs helped some as well as putting a pillow under the mattress at the bottom of the bed to raise it just a little when sleeping.

Hello @dke7: Sorry to hear about your pain after TKR. I also used to have similar pain and I was allergic to almost all pain medications and the side effects were terrible. Finally, my surgeon prescribed Acetaminophen COD #3 tablets (Tylenol with Codeine) and that is the only pain med that did not give me any side effects and was effective and I could sleep well. You should ask your surgeon about this med. I am not on blood thinners though. Good luck.

I had my right knee replaced and have that burning feeling as well. One day I put Lidocaine and I think it got into the staples. Wow that hurt. I forgot I used it before when I had my leg broken. I love icing best of all! Will C in Saint Charles

Now let's find out about you. You had a first TKR 3 years ago. Was it robotic? Was a certain brand of replacement used? What was your physical therapy routine post-surgery?
I, too have had a challenging recovery for my knee. At the time, I was a member of an Inn to Inn walking group. We did try to get in 3-6 miles a training day .....we also were frequently satisfied with 3 miles and breakfast, especially when my knee was acting up. My walking colleagues locked me in the car one day and had an intervention. "Get your knee fixed Chris. Your obvious pain is wearing on us." That's my knee story.
What is your day like? Do you do any exercises at this point? Are you taking any medications for the burning pain? I had the same surgeon who did my reverse shoulder replacement so I trusted him. He warned me....."if you want this knee to last a lifetime...you will not climb up because you will have to come down and that is very rough on any knee. and if you fall.....I can't fix you."
Please let me suggest that you do a search for chronic myofascial pain. The connective tissue all over our bodies is called the fascia. Sometimes it gets very restricted around a previous injury or scar tissue from surgery. While I am looking for some other members with the same issue, please respond to a few questions.
What activities do you participate in? What is your working life like? Have you had any other structural issues, any falls or breaks elsewhere?
