Hi @storie and welcome to Connect!

I wanted to introduce you to fellow Connect members @clemlaa @ambrose @meemer @mieke @michellecrcrn @uneeq1 @lighthouseceliac and @nanceedeefeperi as they have all mentioned leaky gut or something similar in the past and may be able to discuss leaky gut syndrome with you.

Back to you @storie, is this something you experience? If so, how are you doing?

Hello @storie

I have read of several references to "leaky gut" on Connect. I did a little research and found some information that might be helpful to you in understanding the recommended diet, etc. Here is the link to that article, http://www.eatingwell.com/article/289225/what-is-leaky-gut/

How long has this been a problem? Was it diagnosed by a GI specialist?

My daughter struggles with stomach pains later diagnosed as ibs since she was a baby. She. Also had vasculitis when she was in second grade that got her condition worst. After that she was also diagnosed with vasovagal syncope. She either faints or close to faint with some medications, stress or if she was getting sick like with the flu that was a guarantee trip to emergency room.
She also struggles with Cándida as a young adult and we have been told by doctors and natural medicine specialists that all starts in her gut. Her immune system is not strong as she gets sick frequently and some natural doctors have point her gut as linking all her health problems to her leaky gut. She made radical changes to her diet but she is still having issues. She drinks no sodas , no product with msg and flavor enhancers or artificial colors. I am looking for help desespérate as her vasovagal condition is getting pretty bad. She has symptoms almost daily. I beard about bioelectrical therapy to stimulate the vasovagal nerve that helps control the gut nerve and helped with leaky gut snd vasovagal. Not sure who to go to and who else ask for help. Seems to be all information is I. Different sites but no doctor seems to understand all this is related. Any help I can get here will be deeply appreciated.

@gidalsy - Welcome to Connect! I hope we can help you figure out where to get help for your daughter.
I have a couple of questions: How old is your daughter? Can you elaborate on the vasculitis she had in second grade? Has she seen a cardiologist for the fainting? Has she seen a specialist in immunology for the Candida? Anything you recall about testing etc. would be helpful too.
It is heartbreaking to see your child suffer.

Thank you for responding to my post! My daughter is now 25 yrs old. She had the Henoch Shloein púrpura and was in corticosteroids for a months if I remember well. Yes, she was checked by a cardiologist and got a ton of tests done like 2 years ago. The reason was that as she was studying for her CPA test, the stress was so intense during rhose months that beside syncopes, she got one seizure that started while sleeping with not feeling her left arm and that feeling waked her up. Right after she started having a seizure. I called 911 rushed her to the hospital but all mri, tilt test and other neurological test done with Cleveland clinic came back as having vasovagal syncope. She was referred to a cardiology and all tests including 2 week monitoring came back ok.this wasn’t her first time fainting during the night. If she gets sick like a flu is a trip to the hospital, same with drugs that lower blood pressure, an episode is guarantee. But recently she also had repetitive episodes of candida infection and her IBS in my mind is closely related to that. I have some molecular biology background so I can understand what’s being done in research but feel that I find pieces but no one that can help me that have knowledge of the whole problem. I have read about the vasovagal nerve tone and bio electron medicine but looks like is still in clinical trials. Looks like vasovagal nerve may be triggering a uncontrolled tumor necrosis factor which precipitate her IBS, vasovagal and even the Cándida take over when she is going through that Maybe too much reading is overwhelming but not finding medical help that is familiar with all these is even worse.

@gidalsy - Thank you for all the information! I have a background in pediatrics so I’m very familiar with Henoch Schönlein Purpura.
I don’t think it would make her more susceptible to the vasovagal syncope. What is worrisome is her episodes at night and secondary seizures. That would fall into cardiology and neurology specialties. In my mind it seems like her vagus nerve is dominating. I don’t know if she has a neurologist, but it would be very good for her to get a neurologist’s opinion. There are ways to to deal with the vagus nerve. It’s not good to have episodes at night when she is alone.
Candida is a response to a stressed immune system I think. It seems as if she lives with constant stress- fainting adds to her stress.
Just a thought- has she had an endocrinological evaluation of her stress hormones and other hormones? I’m definitely not an expert in this- just thoughts popping up.
Let me know what you are thinking.

Thank you! She visited a neurologist, cardiologist and endocrinologist but only checked for sugar and thyroid, not other hormones even I asked for cortisol and that kind of tests he said is not needed.Neurologist said that her tests showed no epilepsy so is vasovagal syncope. What I missed to check with an immunologist.
Would you recommend to get an appointment with a specific doctor in Mayo Clinic? Not sure how that works. We are willing to drive and get her re-evaluated.

Forgot to say that she has been Looking for dietas for Cándida and leaky guts. She noticed some improvement with Cándida symptoms within a week. One night she had spicy wings which didn’t seem to affect her stomach but witching 2 hours the symptoms came back. She believes that anything hurts her gut will trigger the Cándida but even worse that night she has symptoms again of vasovagal (not fainted) after almost a week doing good on that. I see her gut and vasovagal episodes as well as Cándida are related. Not sure but i wish I find help to test that somehow.

@gidalsy - Yes, I think Mayo Clinic could help your daughter. She has some major issues- they may be connected or separate. Vasovagal syncope interferes with her quality of life. She has GI problems- abdominal pain, IBS and Candida infections. To make an appointment you go to MayoClinic.org and complete an online form detailing health issues you are having. You can phone also of course. I can’t say what department or doctor would be best. They usually help make that decision.

@gidalsy I’ve been a Mayo patient for years. On your very first visit they will start you out with a doctor in general medicine. That doctor from that point will decide on whatever specialists you may need to see and get someone to help you make those appointments.
Best of luck to you!
