Exercise and Physical Activity after Breast Cancer Surgery

What exercise and physical activity helped you the most after breast cancer surgery? What do you wish you had known?

I am still in receiving treatment, but plan on checking out this free program at Y to help cancer survivors start physical activity after treatment.

Has anyone attended this program?

I would suggest doing as much as you possibly feel you can. I currently am in a yoga for osteoporosis prevention class and find it very helpful in many ways. I also have taken part in a strength training class that helped as well. Swimming helps with restoring flexibility and range of motion, too. Good luck -- keep moving!!

Oh thank you for the info unfortunately the closest yoga or exercise classes I could get to are about 40 miles away. I have started walking a bit and counting my steps to increase every day.

Thank you for the info. I however don't live near and facilities that offer any type of exercise or yoga.

This video guides you through exercises soon after surgery (mastectomy or lumpectomy)

@karendb, yoga can be relatively easy to do at home. I would look for gentle yoga or beginners yoga on YouTube.

Hey @cancersucks,
I’m starting that program at the Y on February 26th. I’m feeling hopeful about it since I had a bilateral mastectomy and 7 more surgeries due to complications and have poor upper body strength. I’m BRCA positive, had breast cancer and just canceled a hysterectomy so I could complete the Y program. I’ll let you know how it is after my first sessions. Go to yours so we can both get healthier!!!!
