Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and Hoarse Voice

Posted by frane1939 @frane1939, Dec 31, 2018

I am curious about the hoarseness my husband is having. It seems to be getting worse and at times, it is difficult for me to understand him when he speaks. I am wondering if others with this disease are having the same issues; and, if so, what they are doing if anything about it.

I experience hoarseness on and off. Sipping Traditional Medicinals herbal teas - Throat Coat and Breathe Easy I find helpful.

@frane1939 - Hello! Is your husband's doctor aware that his hoarseness has gotten so severe that you can't understand him at times? Perhaps it's more scar tissue? Has he been ill lately with a cold?

He has not had a cold; and, yes and no about the doctor. I told him in the past about the hoarseness being so bad at times, not only myself, but others are having issues understanding him. He will be seeing his doctor this month and I will mention it again. In the past, when I mentioned it, he sent him to the ENT doctor to determine if there were any nodules which may be affecting the hoarseness. It was determined by the ENT that it was his fibrosis. Perhaps, it is time for another XRay.

Thanks for the reminder. I had ordered the Breathe Easy a while ago when someone mentioned it on this site. I will have him try it.

I have trouble with on/off hoarseness & pulmonologist referred me to ENT. Was scoped & thank God they didn’t find anything. My pulmonologist ended up taking me off one of my inhalers & it helped a lot. Good luck! It’s hard when no one understands what you’re saying. But what is most frustrating is trying to try to pay bills with computer voice driven apps ie Sprint ATT. Takes a sense of humor for sure!!

I realize this was quite a while ago, but I am wondering...what do you mean "sounds like it might be time"?

It could have been clearer, right? I meant it might be time to see the doctor.

This is late for the original poster but I thought I would add this. I use a combination of OTC Flonase and RX Azelastine nasal spray. It took longer for the initial severe hoarseness but cleared up the last bout in one day . Hope this works for others. (IPF diagnosed 2/21)

Welcome, @wbrown2819. I see you've been living with IPF for just over a year now (or perhaps longer). How are you doing? What helps you cope with IPF?
