Mild traumatic brain injury

Posted by carnes @carnes, Dec 22, 2018

Good morning friends, it is so frustrating to forget my point in the middle of a sentence. Forget or can’t find the right word to express what I mean to say. Can’t remember what I did or said 5 minutes ago. It is quite scary. Anyone have professional help on what to do other than puzzles, using the brain when it’s so difficult to think? Thank you for any help . Cognitive therapy helped but insurance won’t cover now.

Though the degree of the injury may vary by member in this discussion, I thought you might gain some valuable input from members like @hedjhog @uldiver @carnes @jakedduck1 as you deal with the challenge of your brain injury. @johnbishop @lakelifelady and @jenniferhunter also may have thoughts for you.

You mentioned, @jodster85, that St. Cloud, MN, still cannot figure out your brain injury that occurred 18 years ago. Will you share more about your injury and what is still to be determined about your diagnosis or treatment?

Lisa. Might you be able to get me off this discussion? I checked all the right boxes twice to ‘unscribe’ but am still receiving posts. My bandwidth is exploding. Thanks and Haopy New Year

@jodster85 Hi Jodster. I would encourage you to see a specialist. A head injury like that can be a site of a stroke that happens later. I'm not saying that to scare you, but that happened to a friend of our family. You said seizures are becoming more frequent and that might be a warning sign. You need to tell your doctor about this.

Hi. First: do not dwell on an inability. Second: I have had to develop recovery skills: these include saying aloud thingz like : it begins with a .., or closeing my eyes or looking away from person I am speaking with to narrow # of inputs.Third is to name your topic before starting: even if it is making a list of what your days schedule is; "This is my Schedule" ... Finally there is thatt challenge of being loooong on thought and slow to speak. I wish for you every grace. I have 4+ uears with a TBI

This is really good counsel. Attitude really has an effect. I suffered a major TBI and was an elite level athlete who struggled to put on pants without leaning against a wall. Balance exercises also help me.

I'm hoping they can fix the spot somewhere I'm sick of being like this.

Hi, @jodster - you'd mentioned a doctor appointment for the increasing seizures you are experiencing post-brain injury, and also a hope they can fix a certain spot. Is your doctor looking at brain surgery for you, or what direction is he or she going with your treatment at this juncture?

@carnes - You'd mentioned challenges with forgetting a point in the middle of a sentence and difficulty recalling what you did or said 5 minutes ago. How are things going with your memory?

Hi, @eazy630 - another thread you may be interested in is https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/adult-life-after-a-tbi

You mentioned that with suffering a TBI you went from elite level athlete to struggling to put on pants. How are activities like that, requiring balance, going now for you? Are you taking a class that focuses on balance or something on your own? What kinds of balance exercises are you doing?

Hi. I'm new to this group. In 2009 I fell down on ice and suffered a concussion. Finally in Nov 2018 I was diagnosed with a TBI. Shortly after it happened I started having tremors, agitation, depression. In Aug 2010 I was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, but it was really just my head injury I found out later.bin 2013 I started to have serious heart problems. I didn't realize the affects my brain injury was having on me. My behavior changed, I had trouble with memory speech, and had personality changes. My decline continued and my life literally fell apart. I knew something was wrong with my brain but Drs never saw anything in scans . Finally I kept seeing Drs and they finally after neuropsychology testing figured it out. I went to DBT class which has helped. I still struggle with memory, speech poor judgement and impulse control but Al least I know what's wrong.
