Holiday Feelings: Are They Merry or Stressful?

Posted by Teresa, Volunteer Mentor @hopeful33250, Dec 18, 2018

We are in the middle of a holiday season marked by twinkling lights, music, movies and sentiments that are supposed to bring joy and cheer. What if you don’t feel those sentiments right now? Is that OK?

Perhaps you have experienced difficulties, maybe health problems, loss of a job, or loss of a loved one. Maybe it is not possible to work-up the holiday cheer that everyone else experiences.

What do we do with the holidays if we are not feeling cheerful and upbeat?

Let's share together what you are doing with your less-than-merry holiday feelings.

@gingerw Hi Ginger, thanks for the info! I hope the weather cooperates. I’m in NC, so I’ll be turning on at 11AM. That is, unless I’m up partying too late! Just kidding. I don’t party! I’d rather be at home with my iPad and Kindle. ....Karen

@debbraw Hi! I was born and raised in Raleigh. When I was 19 we moved to Cary, which is where I live now! Love it! I also love Asheville. It’s so pretty! I went to Appalachian for a little while.

OK @karen00 ... I was born in Gastonia, but I went to school at NC State. I lived in Cary for about 10 years after I graduated. I love that area.

@suerc-Welcome to Mayo Connect.- This can be such a stressful time of year. Can you complain to anyone about your contractor? He has to have a license from some dept. Also, since it's the holidays tell him that you need your bedroom back, that you have back problems and he will have to set up somewhere else. Maybe you have a deck that he can use? That's where my contractor set up. He also cleaned up everything and vacuumed the floors every night . I think that you need to put your foot down with him and make sure that your life is disrupted the least amount.
Are you in PT for your back? Do you still need pain meds for it?
I'm not sure what your daily routine is like but I know that I need to prioritize everything. Are you having Christmas at your house?

well I don't know if you all remember me but I just need to vent. This contractor is still here working, However at Christmas I told him we were going to my sons in Rodchester and when we get home all this crap should be out of the house and the garage. I said if it is not I will personaly do it myself. He said oh you cant do that. So we left for the weekend and when we came home it was all gone. Yay. He didn't come back to work till yesterday to grout. we are working on the shower . he came to work yesterday at 2:30 and left at 6:30. only got half the shower done. at this rate it will take him another month. we are on our 4th month now and I feel like my space is so invaded !!! I have had a broken back. I just want to lay down in my own bed and rest and I cant and I just want to cry.

@suerc - Can you give him a deadline? If you haven't paid him ahead (which I hope that you haven't) you can tell him that you expect the job to be done by a certain time or he wont get paid.
