Holiday Feelings: Are They Merry or Stressful?

Posted by Teresa, Volunteer Mentor @hopeful33250, Dec 18, 2018

We are in the middle of a holiday season marked by twinkling lights, music, movies and sentiments that are supposed to bring joy and cheer. What if you don’t feel those sentiments right now? Is that OK?

Perhaps you have experienced difficulties, maybe health problems, loss of a job, or loss of a loved one. Maybe it is not possible to work-up the holiday cheer that everyone else experiences.

What do we do with the holidays if we are not feeling cheerful and upbeat?

Let's share together what you are doing with your less-than-merry holiday feelings.

Thanks for that perspective, @merpreb, "we have to love them for what they have, not what they don't."

As we approach family dynamics during this holiday time, it is a good thing to remember!

@suerc- Good for you! Although we would all like our close ones to "have a backbone" not all of us are made that way. As hard as it is we have to love them for what they have, not what they don't. Yikes! lol. Please wear a mask when you dust and use you vacuum attachments as much as possible.

When we went down to Rodchester for the weekend I told him that all this better be out of my bedroom by Monday that Gaye him Friday eve ,sat and Sunday. I also told him that the garage better be cleaned up also by the time we get back. He said oh I don't know. I said if you. Don't clean it I will. He said you can't do it. And I said watch me. My husband told me not to be Dutch a bitch. But he won't stand up for me at all. My husband does not have a backbone to stand on. This guy has taken over our house for 4 mo and I am tired of it. I came home this morning and garage is clean and machine is out of the bedroom. Now the daunting task of cleaning up all the dust. Cleaning walls and everything. I walked in the room and I. Could just see the dust in the air. Yuck.

@suerc Good for you! The dust is very bad for lungs, please take precautions. I've got asthma and anyone can get that, so prevention of breathing junk into your lungs is important. We breathe enough with air pollution and all actually have black flecks in our lungs permanently from that. Some stuff stays in your lungs even though your body throws phlegm at it trying the clear the mess. You might want to open the windows while you are cleaning that room as you will be stirring lots of dust into the air. It's probably everywhere in your house, not just the one room. I'm sorry your husband doesn't support you and makes comments about it. He probably doesn't understand the health consequences of living that way. It doesn't take much dust at all to shut my lungs down.

Hello All:

Here is a short video that I borrowed from another discussion group about three tips to reduce stress during the holidays. I think you will enjoy it!

That is very true, @jenniferhunter. It is hard for someone to understand the impact of dust, etc., when they haven't experienced the health problems that we have.
Walking a mile in someone else's shoes makes their problems more understandable.

Christmas Eve Day was delightful. Nothing like grandkids to lighten the stress. I have been working at creating happy memories and leave the dark memories of holidays past where they belong. I want my new memories to be the ones that shine.
