I am scheduled for Septal Myectomy & Mitral Valve Repair Surgery

My husband had septal myectomy on October 4 this year he is 74. He also was able to lead a pretty active life but the incidences of shortness of breath etc were increasing. We live in San Diego and chose to go to Mayo in Rochester because of their HCM program.
Because he was “fit” (not compromised) prior to surgery his recovery has been amazing, he was discharged from hospital on the 4th day, we stayed in a hotel for a couple of days and flew home on the 7th day and apart from feeling down for 3/4 days is now back to normal (his normal) lol.

Thanks so much for the reply,that is reassuring Its just a difficult decision when you feel OK. We live about 100 miles from Penn so it would be a easy drive
We are thinking of staying at a hotel close by for a couple of days

@carsangelop you will feel so much better, I don’t think my husband realized how slowly he walked prior to surgery (we live at 4500ft) until this last few weeks 3.5 miles in about 70 mins. He’s also working on upper body strength.

Well all went very well Surgeon was able to repair my mitral valve . He said the septal wall was not as large as anticipated ,but did have to shave it some
I was in ICU 1day and then moved to a cardiac floor .Recovery was going good until the 4th day when I went into Afib and Afib flutter I will tell you it scared the heck out of me .They did a TEE to make sure there were no blood clots ,and then did a cardio-version I believe that is what it is called to shock the heart into rhythm. I was discharged on the 10 th day .Iam at home now and feeling pretty good considering. I have a follow up with my Cardiologist Monday the 18th. So we will see hoe that goes
I still have some shortness of breath when climbing stairs .I hope if will improve as I rehab .From what I understand my doctor needs to clear me for that
I must say the nurses and doctors at Penn were 1st class all the way
For others who went through this surgery ,how long did it take for your symptoms to lesson

I just had that surgery at the mayo clinic on Thursday April 4, 2019 by Dr Dearani. He was able to repair instead of replace which I an so grateful for. He also did a myectomy and tricuspid repair. Did not end up with complete heart block. I get out of hospital tomorrow. He is the master!

That is the same operation I had .I am now off of Amiodarone ,and no signs of Afib from my pacemaker report
Two weeks into rehab a feeling great .Hopefully I can get off of the Warfrin in the next couple of months
