What is ground glass on a lung CT scan?

Chris. I read your posts. I am not familiar with menengitis, strokes, etc. I t seems to me that you are having a pretty rough time. Do you have a doctor at Mayo who can help coordinate appointments or tests for you? Have you any certain diagnosis!

Hi @chris8515, I'd like to bring in a few other members who have had scans that reported ground glass opacity (GGO), such as @reibur1951 @jewel8888 @merilee @irene5 @kaystrand and @llwortman.

I agree with Merry, Chris. You should ask questions until you fully understand the results of your scans and lab results. Ask what follow-up is necessary and how often. If no follow-up is necessary, be sure to ask why not. It is important that you are clear about the reasons why if indeed no follow-up is required at this time and what your next steps are.

@chris8515 ask questions and google do research and then go back and ask questions - I hope the doctor does follow-ups

As being done - Paul has STage 4B lung cancer diagnosis in Oct. 2016 - been through 12 weeks of chemo and into the Prembo phase of the study gets CT-Scans every 6 weeks see progress or non-progress or if... right now is stable the "ground glass" nodules showed up in last 2 scans and they are keeping an alert eye on them - at this point for Paul there seems to be no worry but watching them carefully.

I too have had CT scans that showed ground-glass opacity in one of my lungs. I've also been told it is not a significant finding. It can be a result of a previous bout of pneumonia or some other infection. I see you have posted in some other discussion groups. How are you doing?

@chris8515- Hello again Chris. You really don't need one more thing do you? Why did your doctor order a CT scan ? I'm assuming that it was a pulmonologist? You said that you have had CT scans that show GGN- ground glass nodules. Are you being followed by a pulmonologist? GGN can be a lot of things and if more than one shows up, or grows than it really needs to be followed.

Are ground glass opacities an indication there is lung cancer in the lungs or a precursor to lung cancer?

Ground glass opacity (GGO) nodules may be indicate early stage cancer, but not always. Did you recently have a CT scan that indicated GGO nodules? Have you had a chance to talk to your doctor about the results of the test?

@jpremin- Good morning. I'd also like to welcome you to Mayo Clinic Connect. I was pretty scared when I was told that I had a GGO show up. I thought that maybe something sharp was causing the CT to look like that. I am a lung cancer survivor of 22+ years and most of my nodules show as ground glass. I don't know if you were shown the CT scan itself but when you look at the nodules they actually look like ground glass. Simply put GGO can be non-specific findings that can indicate a partial filling of air spaces, of a mass of cells and fluid that has seeped out of blood vessels or an organ, especially in inflammation, or cancer. Non-specific means that the CT scan shows GGO but doesn't discern what caused it or what is inside. It just shows that something changed.
What symptoms led to you having a Lung CT? What did your doctor say about your results?

have not talked to doctor as of yet- I just heard of a new idea they put wires in your lungs and people love it short breath is almost a memory , can not remember name of evasive procedure, do you know ?
