Gratitude Discussion Group

Posted by Debbra Williams, Alumna Mentor @debbraw, Nov 24, 2018

Hi everyone! Just before Thanksgiving @michellegraffradford posted a blog called Gratitude Changes Everything. She suggested three techniques to help incorporate gratitude into our daily lives:

  • Start the Day with Gratitude (before getting up think of three people you are grateful for)

  • Maintain a Gratitude Journal to record times when you are grateful

  • Count Blessings – not sheep! (Review the day and remember moments of gratitude)

Her blogpost was so inspiring that a lot of us decided we wanted to form a Gratitude Group to keep the attitude of gratitude going. The blogpost area is not an ideal space for a big discussion group so I am moving the discussion over here to the “Just Want to Talk” Group. Let’s use this space to share and discuss our Gratitude Journey. I’m going to suggest that we each try to take a minute from the day and post here what has made us feel thankful today. It can be as small as a stranger’s smile on the bus or as large as fulfilling a major life dream – or anywhere in between. We can also discuss how we are doing with the three techniques. Sometimes it is easier to form new habits with support from others.

Michelle's full blogpost is at the link below. You may want to review it or print it out to help get started!

I look forward to hearing from others in the Gratitude Group and to having others join us here! Thanks to those who already shared great stories. If you haven't yet, what gratitude will you share today?!

@merpreb

I hear you @contentandwell! Things in the field of doctors and insurance companies brings the question of who really is treating you! I could go on forever. But this isn't the right place. I had to select a new pulmonologist and so far I'm very happy. He's local so I can see him quickly if need be! His PA is lovely and bright. I'd see her all the time if I could!

@merpreb I go for a pulmonary test tomorrow. Not a clue what to expect. Another adventure.

@parus-It's a lot of holding your breath and then breathing out. It's to test to see how much carbon dioxide you are exhaling and how much air you are breathing in. It's a piece of cake. Each hospital's testing equipment is a bit different. https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/spirometry/about/pac-20385201
What are they testing your for?

I've had a couple of pulmonary function tests, @parus. They aren't too bad at all. Is it called a pulmonary function test or something else?

@hopeful33250 A complete PFT w/ Post Bronchodilator Spirometry. I need to be there at 8:30 tomorrow morning (Thursday). Sounds like a type of carnival ride. The scoliosis is starting to have pressure on internal organs. It happens. We are trying to figure out the fatigue and why I have a hard time getting enough air in thus causing my oxygen levels to be low which is new. Old age has certainly brought about many new things.

@merpreb Thanks. I am not concerned about the test. The doc offered me an inhaler and I told her it is not that bad. I just have a hard time getting enough air in a times or it feels this way and not because I am panicky or anything. Just going to check things out. I am just so tired all of the time. More than usual.

@parus- Please don't hesitate to use an inhaler!

@merpreb I will use an inhaler if the tests in the morning determine it is necessary. Why do you say not to hesitate to use one? Not hesitating rather don’t want to use something that is not necessary. Just me.

@parus I understand what you are saying. I have a friend with scoliosis and she is having the same problem with the pressure on the lung area. You are right, it is a carnival ride - one problem causes another problem. I'm so glad for you that this is all being investigated so that you can get help. Yes, I agree with you, the aging process gives us a lot of new learning. If you don't mind sharing, what is your oxygen level usually?

@parus- I don't want you saying no because you didn't want another medicine. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I'm glad that you are getting tested!

I am grateful today to wake up, have a warm roof over my head and not have to go out in the weather. There's so much more, but a year and a half ago I didn't know how long I was going to have that place to wake up in. So today I'm grateful to not have to worry about it in the foreseeable future.
