Gratitude Discussion Group

Posted by Debbra Williams, Alumna Mentor @debbraw, Nov 24, 2018

Hi everyone! Just before Thanksgiving @michellegraffradford posted a blog called Gratitude Changes Everything. She suggested three techniques to help incorporate gratitude into our daily lives:

  • Start the Day with Gratitude (before getting up think of three people you are grateful for)

  • Maintain a Gratitude Journal to record times when you are grateful

  • Count Blessings – not sheep! (Review the day and remember moments of gratitude)

Her blogpost was so inspiring that a lot of us decided we wanted to form a Gratitude Group to keep the attitude of gratitude going. The blogpost area is not an ideal space for a big discussion group so I am moving the discussion over here to the “Just Want to Talk” Group. Let’s use this space to share and discuss our Gratitude Journey. I’m going to suggest that we each try to take a minute from the day and post here what has made us feel thankful today. It can be as small as a stranger’s smile on the bus or as large as fulfilling a major life dream – or anywhere in between. We can also discuss how we are doing with the three techniques. Sometimes it is easier to form new habits with support from others.

Michelle's full blogpost is at the link below. You may want to review it or print it out to help get started!

I look forward to hearing from others in the Gratitude Group and to having others join us here! Thanks to those who already shared great stories. If you haven't yet, what gratitude will you share today?!

As usual I’m off to a great start. Anyone know how to turn on a slow cooker?

Use the dial on the front of the slow cooker, @jakedduck1. Usually it will take four hours on high (if the roast is not too big). The carrots, onions should be scraped and cut into quarters, the potatoes should be cut in quarters (unless they are the small potatoes), then just cut them in half. The veggies go on the bottom of the slow cooker. I usually brown the roast in a skillet before placing in the slow cooker. That's my best advice. It should be wonderful! You will feel proud of yourself when it comes out of the cooker and it will smell wonderful. Next time you make it, you can invite company over.😉
PS The cooking bags are great, I use them all the time. No clean-up needed.

I’m having trouble getting motivated to fixing my roast. Have to go to the store too. Probably be eating dinner tomorrow for breakfast. On the bright side I have some slow cooker bags so if all goes right I won’t have to wash that. Do the veggies have to be pealed? Better get started. I’m almost ready to go back to the prepared foods/microwave days.
Oh the agony of it all,

Dial? No dial. It has flat buttons and I pressed them all, nothing. I’m hunting for my owners manual. Found manuals to things I don’t even have anymore. Brown it, like in a pan? Is that a requirement?

Hmmm...the flat buttons must replace the dial. Are the flat buttons labeled? It is a good idea to brown the roast first in a pan/skillet, but if it too much of a stressor for you, just put it in the slow cooker, it might take an hour or so more. The browning helps it taste better (just an opinion).

Jeez, more good news, it works now. None of the outlets on that wall work. Oh goodie I get to hire an electrician. How joyous. Never had these problems when I microwaved.
Back to the fun,

I have loved reading about all the slow cooker food! You all make me smile. I'm grateful today for in home physical therapy. Today my therapist got me outside for a walk. We walked from my house to a little nearby lake. My knee is doing great and I'm slowly getting back a little appetite and some clearing of the brain fog. Every day is a little tiny bit better so that's good!
