Help for dealing with personality disorder in family member

Posted by dazlin @dazlin, Nov 16, 2018

Just wondering if Mayo offers counseling on how to cope with a very close, much loved family member that wreaks havoc on me.

Hi, @bobsgift - thanks for the books you've suggested on borderline personality disorder (BPD) that have been helpful for you.

I'm trusting that Connect members who have been part of this conversation will return and offer their support and any resources they may have as you seek to help your daughter. I'm hoping @dazlin will provide an update on the loved one they mentioned who has some delusional thinking/personality disorder, @dd1931 will talk about how her daughter is doing recently, and @rachelanne will share how she personally is doing with BPD symptoms. @windwalker and @gingerw also may have some insights for you.

bobsgift, it's got to be a challenge trying to find the right professionals who are very familiar with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Are you still seeking a residential program for your daughter along with a new therapist and psychiatrist?

@bobsgift It is always heartening to see when family members are seeking assistance to work with those enduring mental heath issues! How has your search been doing? Just by putting "residential treatment center for bipolar disorder" in the search bar, you will see there are several options that come up. Have any of the professionals you've been in contact with, had suggestions for residential treatment programs? As they would know your daughter's situation firsthand, they may have some stellar ideas. And, please do not forget that you and the rest of the family also need support to navigate this time. I hope you will come back and let us know what you find out.
