Art for Healing

Posted by Harriet Hodgson @harriethodgson1, Oct 26, 2018

Kudos to the Montreal Museum of Fine Art for allowing physicians to write prescriptions for free admission to the museum. And kudos to Mayo Clinic for its art program. From the beginning, Mayo Clinic believed that art can uplift patients and foster healing. Whether it's Rochester, Jacksonville or Scottsdale, Mayo Clinic displays a wide range of artwork for patients. The Rochester site published a brochure for a self-guided tour of artwork. I live in Rochester and every time I'm at Mayo, I take the time to look at the artwork.

@parus

Doing art does help heal my mind at times.

It seems to me that the arts are a gift from the divine, a way to sooth the soul. The arts speak the language of metaphor.

I saw this today about cutting paper. This looks like a lace wall hanging, and is really nice. Phil Ponce (who does this) has a PBS talk show in Chicago, and I thought I would share. If you have the patience, any one can do this. Enjoy!

@jenniferhunter Beautiful And stunning work! I think my hands would cramp up too much from the arthritis to handle such fine motor skills.

@becsbuddy Would you be able to share some of your son's work? I'd love to see it. I love lace, and seeing something that looks like lace is neat. I recently got interested in Irish crochet lace and bought some pieces. The motifs have all kinds of flowers and plants that are made individually, and then those are crocheted together into a shape to make a collar or even a dress. The Irish rose is a common 3 dimensional motif. If I was born a hundred years ago, I'd probably be in a circle of women doing that and making beautiful clothing.

Here's an article about the benefits of making art, even if you think you're not good at it.... just trying and playing with it has benefits. Thanks Teresa for reminding me to share this.

Thanks, @jenniferhunter. I don't think of myself as artistic but I'm going to give some art work at try!

Good Morning kids,
I can't get over how talented you gals are.
If I can successfully draw a stick figure I feel deserving of a standing ovation. Nice there are so many artistic people who bring so much beauty into the world. Keep up the beautiful work and continue sharing.
