New Diagnosis of MAC/MAI & I'm scared
Hi, I am new to this site. I just got the results of my broncoscopy a week ago. First I was told I had Staph Aureus in my lungs & was put on Levaquin X 10 days. OK, Now she tells me I had MAI & I think the other one is MAC. Anyway, My pulmonologist said we are waiting for the sensitivity test to see if the bacteria in my sputum are sensitive to the antibiotics....or not....since now some strains are resistant. My name is Sue from Oregon and I am 61 years old with Sjogren's Syndrome, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Bronchiectasis, and now THIS. My RA & bronchiectasis are extensive with a lot of coughing and I am on a biologic immunosuppressive drug, infusion, for the RA. I read several posts at this site, looked up the side effects of the 3 meds my pulmonologist said she will put me on, scheduled an eye and hearing exam. This is scarey!!!! I'm already weary of my life having been turned upsidown in the last 4 years with my health struggles. (On SS disability now) I talk with a clinical psychologist every other week & she is helpful. Is it really helpful to talk about it online? Or does it just make one ruminate about it all the more? I'm not sure which it is. Please let me know if it has helped you cope, or not. Thanks.

Hi! I thought it was just me but now I know. I had burning and discomfort in my chest for months..it was reflux and it made me so sick on my stomach also. It’s scary because I thought it was my lungs too but I’m very grateful it was not. If I eat 3 hours before bed I’m ok if not I have to sit up or it will cause discomfort. And about the thumb does it have anything to do with our lungs? I have been having some horrible pains in my thumbs and it feels like I can’t use them at times. I thought it was RA. All the strange things in life. 🙂 hugs to all. Stay safe Rita.
@america Not Terry, but about the thumb - As far as I know, thumb pain is not related to MAC or lungs. In my case it is arthritic deterioration - it has pretty much given my body fits for 30 years now. Hands, feet, hips, neck, back, now starting in knees and elbows.
Repair surgery is almost like annual maintenance for me...
Sue
@sue I wonder if so many have bad thumbs...which l have ...not only from osteoarthritis ….but the wear and tear of them over the years especially due to use of computers and smartphones/ipads???? tdrell
Hi Sue! Do you have RA? I do and it’s just been such an experience. Pain in my body and I can’t do most of the things I used to do. I am trying to do as much as I can because I love to keep myself going. I also have Sjogrens and 1 vocal cord so it difficult to swallow pills. That makes life harder for me because not all meds comes in liquids or some pills that really works I can’t crush. It’s good that we have nebulizers and some meds to inhale. I wish you all the best and so sorry about all your pains. Rita.
@america I don’t know if this will help, but the pills my husband can’t crush he puts in applesauce or butter. That has helped him. irene5
@sounder the Pari Eflow is a fantastic machine. My Dr said she had a patient with a pari for 20 years and still going strong. I have one but diddnt realise it was the only machine for using Arkirice! We do not have that follow up and med delivery in New Zealand, thats fantastic.
Hi Terri! That is what I was thinking. Between my laptop, and especially my cell phone; I feel like it could be the like what corporal tunnel does to wrists. I have been trying to dial back my electronic use.
Rita, I believe my thumbs hurt from too much time on my cell phone texting on FaceBook, etc. Could that be your issue also?
My daughter GUI has only one arm. She is 32 years old and is a social worker and soccer coach. She had carpal tunnel surgery last fall at age 31. She is constantly on her phone, computer ( especially now with online teaching), or driving (with her hand tightly gripped on the steering wheel) for school or soccer. I was flabbergasted that at such a young age she would need carpal tunnel surgery. With all the gamers out there as well, I suspect carpal tunnel surgery will soon be as common as filling a cavity! irene5
@sounder27 Thank you for the tutorial on using and getting set up for Arikayce. I had no idea, and this is good for us all to know about.
