Gamma knife for meningiomas

Greetings - do any followers of this group have any experience with the use of the "gamma knife" when arresting the growth of benign meningiomas? Thanks!

Hello, my sister had Gamma Knife radiation last year at Mayo Rochester. She goes back this month for another MRI to see if the tumors responded, hopefully shrunk. I will be back in touch with her results.

Did she have any side effects from the treatment?

I had this done last December, I had 5 treatments and my tumor is slowly shrinking.

My sister said the head piece was not as bad as she expected. It did hurt a little at first. She had some headaches and some numbness after but no serious side effects..

Welcome, @lisakuehl,

I'm so glad you've joined Connect, and that you've "connected" with @nancye3 and @mrser52. May I ask if you want to find more information about gamma knife and meningiomas for yourself or a loved one?

I had no side effects during my treatment, but I did have a hard time with the treatment. Having that tight mask over my face and head. I had to take Xanax so I wouldn't freak out.

You can ask for something if you feel you can't handle the mask. Ask ahead of time before you go to your appointment.

I'm asking for a family member who has this procedure scheduled at Mayo next week.
