Thinking of training for 5k

Posted by ihatediabetes @ihatediabetes, Jul 18, 2018

Hi everyone, I have been off connect for awhile. Got email invite from Colleen to engage on connect. Well I have become an expert uber driver since have been gone. Its nice to get out and make airports runs and other trips. Keeps me busy. Well I have been thinking of training for a 5k. The Twin Cities Marathon is a few months away and there are shorter races the day before the marathon. There are half mile, mile, 5k, and 10k races. So I have been playing with the idea of running the 1 mile or 5k race. I have never run a real race before. But I am thinking about it.

@ihatediabetes You will do great for your 5k! How many weeks before your race? I love to run but haven't been able to as of recent due to an injury and other circumstances (not related to running). For running I follow the Jeff Galloway method (Google his name and you will find books etc..). I run intervals 3 - 4 minutes walk 1 minute. The 1 min. is for my body to recover. I've run 5k, 12k, half marathons, marathon relay and one marathon. Based on your 'name' I'm guessing you have diabetes? Type 1 or 2 and how do to manage your blood sugar right before, during and after your workout? I have a friend who's type 1 so I'm familiar with what she has to do during a competition.

I have type 2 but I don't take insulin. That is associated with low blood sugar. So I don't have to worry about passing out from low blood sugar. So it's not as complicated with type 2 compared with type 1.Running has metabolic benefits for diabetes.

I am pretty sore after my training today. I think I was in the club like 1and half hours. But at least I don't have to train tomorrow.

It sounds like you are in great hands! I'm ACSM CPT and my client's health is paramount before I prescribe an exercise program. I consult with my client's Dr. for any pre-existing conditions as needed. So awesome that you are dedicated to improving your health!

Personally I prefer walking to running - I am 63, and have been walking for several years now. That has been art of my efforts to control my weight and my A1C/diabetes. I have walked quite a few 5Ks and it is great fun! Even did the 5K/10K combination two years now at the Illinois Marathon. I encourage you to give it a go - I bet you can do it!

I have discovered that its important to have a goal like 5k to not get bored. I have been following training program. Its one minute walking, one minute running for 10 minutes this week. Then I have a resistance training program. I have a notebook where I do my trainings. So I think having a goal helps me to stay engaged. When I signed up for the 5k I put down 15 minute miles as my probable speed. I can't do that now. I go between 2.6mph walk and 3.5mph jog on treadmill for 10 minutes. So I have long way to go 4 miles per hour for 46 minutes to finish the 5k. But I am not bored. I am engaged and thinking about running shoes and clothes right now.

@ihatediabetes, I’m so glad you started this discussion. I “ran” my first 5k last year. While I’m proud of myself, there were speed walkers who finished faster than I did. LOL. Never mind, I did it! Do I like running? Not yet. But I’m still doing it. Like you, @ginaquilts, I find running a bit boring, although I don’t mind walking. That’s odd, isn’t it?

I’m a walk, run, walk type runner. I followed John Stanton’s method of running from his book “Running: The Complete Guide To Building Your Running Program”
https://www.amazon.com/Running-Complete-Guide-Building-Program/dp/0143176099
According to his method, you never run for longer than 10 minute segments, followed by 1 minute. That made it easier for me.

IHateDiabetes, I’m envious that you have a whole team of people helping you get ready. Is your race this Saturday? As in tomorrow? All the best. Can’t wait to hear how you do.

Thank you, and I wish I could lay claim to that wisdom. From today's Mayo Clinic Newsletter: "You're more likely to stick with an exercise program if you're having fun. If you're not enjoying your workouts, try something different." I'm currently in search of that something different or a way to return to dance, which is enjoyable and not in the least a chore for me. I just got back from two weeks in Hawaii, surfing every day. Surfing has been a great way to improve my balance. You are expected to fall a lot, so I didn't stick out as being unusual, and it doesn't hurt when you fall into the water - a lot easier on the body than falling on concrete. Dance classes start up again in just over a week, and I am hoping my balance is good enough to make it through the beginner classes.

I'm eyeing up the Zumba classes at my local gym. According to the advertising, it is suitable for all levels. Other women my age seem to cope with it and surely it would be totally engaging.

I love Zumba classes! I'm signed up for one (and a ballet class) starting August 20. I'm hoping I can remain upright and not get kicked out of class again for being a liability risk. A good instructor will tailor the class to all levels, with options from low impact to more advanced. It can take a few classes to get comfortable with the moves. Let me know how it goes.

I will. I am a bit shy about it but I think the musical part of it will be good for me. I will place myself right at the back!

Hi, @ihatediabetes A 5k run is just perfect. Won't require too much training and will give you a sense of achievement. These running events also give us a sense of community. I miss my runs. At 72 I daren't even jog because of my ankles but I walk and have signed up for the Auckland Marathon 12 k event in October. Training for it with a buddy is part of the fun.

I admire you. I am trying to work up to 1/2 hour on my stationery bike. One foot in front of the other!
