Microinvasive breast cancer and positive senitel lympyh node

Posted by jusme @jusme, Jul 6, 2018

I had bilateral mastectomy and removal of sentinal nodes due to dcis insitu however when pathology report came in they found another type of cancer ...microinvasive breast cancer with one of two sentinel nodes positive. Has anyone else had this diagnoses ? There's not much available on it. I have went for the body scan to assure it has not spread . Still anxiously awaiting results .

Hi, @jusme -- I'm so glad that you found this group on Connect and that you reached out.

This study on microinvasive breast carcinoma published in Human Pathology journal, though a few years old now, has some useful information: https://bit.ly/2u7eLWS.

I also found this site with summary information on microinvasive breast carcinoma from authors from some of the National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer centers, and thought you might be interested: https://bit.ly/2KXNDAI.

Something this summary says is that "Microinvasive breast carcinoma is defined as invasive carcinoma of the breast with no invasive focus measuring more than 1 mm [1]. It is almost always encountered in the setting of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS); thus, it is commonly referred to as ductal carcinoma in situ with microinvasion." Jan 16, 2017

I thought, in light of that, that you might like to meet other Connect members who have talked about ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), like @rpierro @nonipoppy @lexalaska @cindytapp @yasmine @conny51 @azlane. Hoping they can share some of their experiences with DCIS with you, and shed further light on microinvasive breast cancer if this also applies to them or others they know.

You mentioned having a body scan to ensure the cancer has not spread. When do you expect to receive the results, @jusme?

Hi
So sorry your going through this I had the same thing happen to me. It was after surgery all nodes clear until pathology where it said I had 4 micromats. With only one node being positive they put me in a grey area. I did 6 rounds of ct they gave me option of radiation but with many tumer boards they were on the fence. Do you know what type of cancer you have luminal a b triple negative ?

Hi graceak10! I'm so confused as to what type . My dcis insitu was estrogen progesterone + . So i assume so is the microinvasive breast cancer. They ran more pathology on it and I'll find out July 11th if her2+ or -. He stated if it's not spread anywhere, I'll do radirion and take a chemo pill for 5yrs. There not much info on this type of cancer therefore I'm not sure which route is the best . So so frustrating !!!

I was diagnosed with dcis in stiu with suspected microinvasion on June 18th. Waiting on genetic results before surgical plan. Did u have any pain in the lymph nodes?

No I had no sign of it invading my sentinal lymph nodes. What does your oncologist suggest for your surgical and treatment plan? I'm so sorry to hear of your diagnosis!! I will keep you n my thoughts and prayers .

Lumpectomy and radiation if genetic testing comes back negative. If positive bilateral masectomy. Will also biopsy lymph nodes. I have not heard of anyone else with the microinvasion. How long from your diagnosis to surgery. My biopsy was horrible they hit a blood vessel and i got a huge hematobia.

2 weeks from my diagnoses to surgery . From what I understand, if I'm clear everywhere else, I'll have radiation and the chemo pill for 5 years with scans every 3 months . The anxiety of waiting on the scan results is a nightmare !! And yes the biopsy was horrible for me as well. I had the same thing happen. To be honest the bruising from the biopsy looked worse than the bruising from the mastectomy!!

And I'm like you , I've not heard of microinvasion in anyone else . We must be super special lol ugh . And there is very little info available due to the small percent of women diagnosed with it.

Hi @jusme, any update on next steps? The type of breast cancer and treatment plan?

@graceak10 Did you decide to also do radiation in addition to chemo?
