Candida

Does anyone have any information on how medical doctors treat Candida? Are there any tests that can be run?
Are their medications that work?

@astaingegerdm I have been treated with oral Diflucan before but it was 3 doses max. It just wasn't enough. Have you gone through the anti fungal IV treatment? I feel as though it sounds more powerful and effective?

I have been gluten free since 2016 when i was diagnosed with celiac disease via bloodwork. I have also been dairy free since 2018 when i was told i have a severe casein allergy. So I eat a pretty clean diet, although my love for wine doesn't help the candida issue.

What type of doctor did you go to for treatment of your autoimmune illnesses and candida?

@amandaburnett if you could explain how I can find a team of specialists that would be amazing. I am looking into an integrative practice in Washington DC right now that utilizes IV therapy for autoimmune and candida treatments. They just aren't covered by insurance and it will be very hard to make it work. Any help would be appreciated. I feel like I'm functioning at 30% and its awful.

@jgalello - I was treated at Mayo- Jacksonville. I never required IV treatment.
It sounds as if you are doing everything right on your end.
Personally, I would aim for Mayo Clinic and avoid the integrative practice. I know that at Mayo they use evidence based medicine and have access to the best current research.

Amen, Ingegerd Enscoe! I worked for so many years with a plethara of doctors trying to find answers. Not until I went to Mayo, on the verge of a real breakdown due to the lack of interest by the medical field, the wrong diagnoses, no diagnoses, etc. The Mayo system is designed for this kind of challenge. I think I make all my doctors happy with all the challenges I throw their way!!!! Seriously, I strongly agree this is the type of person with real challenges that cross over within the body that Mayo is designed to help. They are certainly helping me. Blessings in your journey.....hope you find this helpful. Elizabeth

Oh, I have several autoimmune diseases that have really mucked up things. And, often, I understand if you have one, you're likely to have several. ANd, my thyroid has really been upsetting most of my body systems. Aldosterone, also. These are things Mayo will put together and provide answers, treatments. be well....ElIZABETH

@ess77 omg isn't is crazy how many doctors you can see and they don't care/aren't curious enough to come up with an alternate solution?! I spoke with an infectious disease doctor the other day. I have every symptom of candida and he told me i don't have it (just by speaking to me on the phone) and that it's probably something else and basically good luck figuring it out. I'm at that breaking point too.

Which Mayo clinic did you go to and did you have to go back to that location multiple times? How did they test and treat your autoimmune issues?

I live in Florida, so Mayo Jacksonville is my personal choice. I first saw a rheumatologist when Mayo first was built in Jax, in the late 1980's I think, and was diagnosed with Sarcoid. Just recently, the last 2 years, have been going back and now all my medical care is at Mayo....except my PCP because Mayo doesn't accept Medicare in their Primary Care area. When that changes, I'm there, too.

@jgalello @ess77 Even if it at times was a struggle at Mayo to get a treatable diagnosis after years of testing, I kept pushing and they searched some more. New studies showed what I have. Local doctors get testy sometimes when they can't pin it down.
Not all doctors are comfortable saying that they don't know - having been in that business myself I did not have a problem admitting that I did not know. We all have limitations. However, I often called specialists to discuss a patient or refer out. Places like Mayo or University Medical Centers provide more expert care.
We all come to understand that we have to be in charge of our own health.

A few years ago I was having several sinus infections and was told by the ENT docs that surgery was necessary, then I went to an Integrative Clinic (real docs) and was told it was no doubt a fungal infection and to avoid sugar and yeast containing foods as these "feed" fungal infections and was also given a homeopathic for fungal treatment. Within a short time I was feeling great, then eventually went on a gluten free diet and still do that. That was probably 10 years ago. Perhaps if you can do away with the sugar and yeast foods and see what happens? Best of health~~Baz

I have been struggling with candida for over 8 years now. At first I thought it was just chronic yeast infections but after going to multiple gyn's and getting no relief i started going to functional doctors. I've been to 4 functional doctors where I have found out I have celiac disease, allergy to casein, adrenal fatigue, and borderline thyroid issues. I've taken nystatin, and tried the candida diet for 3 weeks with antifungal herbs but it just keeps coming back. I am constantly itchy all over by body (vaginal, eyes, ears, scalp, all over). I get red dots on my skin when it flares up usually on my stomach and armpits. I've also been struggling with chronic fatigue, depression and anxiety, I used to work in a sick building where I was exposed to mold and other toxins that showed up on tests. I'm not sure if I have been able to clear the mold and toxins from my body yet and if that is also fueling the candida. I am so discouraged and upset that its so hard to find a doctor who cares to get to the bottom of this. I feel like I'm at the end of the line and don't know where else to go and what type of doctor can help me next. I am starting to wonder if IV therapy for candida is effective and if i should look into that. Does anyone know of any doctors around Baltimore Maryland who specialize in candida? At this point i am willing to travel any where if it means I can find relief from this.

jgalello, candida is a tough nut to crack. You mentioned red dots on your skin and itchy that may also be from a vitamin C deficiency and
borderline thyroid issues, chronic fatigue, depression and anxiety that are symptomatic of a thiamine deficiency (vitamin B1). Thiamine and vitamin C are needed in overall health and fighting candida.. Thiamine has a critical role in digestive health and function which if further impacted by insufficient levels of magnesium causing a deficiency of thiamine because it and vitamin D require magnesium to become bioactive. Benfotiamine is a fat soluble form of thiamine that can pass through the blood/brain barrier easier than water soluble thiamine forms. Liposomal vitamin C offers high absorption and long activity. Please research these forms of thiamine and vitamin C. I hope these links offer more answers you are looking for:

@baz10 That's great that you were able to avoid surgery and treat it naturally. I have celiac and have been gf since i found out in 2016. I have also been of dairy for 2 years. I always try to stay away from yeast and sugars. Unfortunately after indulging a little over Thanksgiving it was enough to put the candid into overdrive 🙁
