Stage 3 Kidney Disease and Diet: What can I eat?

Posted by carnes @carnes, Jun 11, 2018

It seems there is very little you can eat that is healthy for the Kidneys. The web site Davida has plenty of food on it but contradicts what other sources say. Anyone know anything for breakfast, lunch and dinner that does not have any sugar or flour bodies the obvious boring or bland foods good for Kidneys and I’m allergic to sugar of any kind of sweetener and flour. Thank you.

Hi, Ausie, I'm also diag. with CKD so have used the Davita site for recipes. Will see if I can find the Quick Ref. Guide and post a link. Thank you for the information!

Hi fiesty,

It took a bit of digging to find because Davita's website is not the easiest to search. I'm including it here in case you haven't seen it--

Go to — https://www.davita.com/diet-nutrition/kidney-friendly-cookbooks
Scroll down to the first box just below "Download Our Free Kidney-Friendly Cookbooks and Diet Guide"
Click on the first box — "Cooking for One of Two" cookbook (which has some awesome and quick recipes).
Scroll down to the end of the cookbook till you see Quick Reference Guide!
Quick Reference Guide is 2 pages, the second of which is the handy chart with "Guidelines for what to eat for choronic kidney disease (CKD) stages"

There are some great recipes too!

@ausie Here is the general link from DaVita for their diet and recipe portion of the website. Many things to read, think over, and get you involved in making diet decisions and preparing recipes. Each person may have additional limitations for best nutrition, if there are additional health issues.

Hi ginger,
I've been finding out that meal planning is very important and very specific. I had my first dietician visit but just learned a bit of the basics about potassium, phosphorus, protein. And received some helpful food lists. But it may be a bit more involved that just a list. So hopefully my next visit, in May, with the dietician yields some more specific info, and I'll need to ask for more detailed info.

In case you have not seen the way to the Davita Quick Reference Guide, I was finally able to find the way and here it is--

I have been on a strict kidney diet for over a year and I never cheat. My nephrologist just had me have extensive blood work and I have improved from a Stage 3 to a Stage 2 CKF. I have been so careful that my potassium is now too low, so he has instructed me to eat more potassium rich foods. A proper diet can help and it is easy after you have adjusted to it.

Hi Jane,
I'm so glad to hear such great news that you went from Stage 3 to Stage 2! I haven't heard about eating more potassium but that is something I'll try to learn more about. Blessings to you!

Hi, Ausie, Many factors Can affect a GFR value. Good to remember that the lab number is what is showing for that day...not a cumulative number of days so there may be some fluctuation from one lab test to another. Creatine numbers are another helpful value to track and charting those along with others over a period of labs can help determine whether we are gaining, maintaining or decreasing kidney function. Learning more about CKD has helped keep me proactive and careful with my diet. Best to you!

@darlingtondoll You are doing very well. I am spending more and more time on my wheels. I wonder if you could "sweep" you floors using a Swifer because it is lighter weight and maneuvers so easily. I doubt you can pick up the sweepings, but you might be able to push it into a corner. I am thinking more and more about transporting trays and I think I might have a plexiglass tray made that will clip onto my chair. My son had one when he was little and it worked well. As far as I know there is nothing like this on the market, but maybe I just have not looked in the right places. But then, it might be best for your "helper" to be your carrier. haha

I have a tray that was made for my wheelchair. I had a custom made chair according to my height, weight and hip size. I am a rather small person so I had a custom, ultralight chair built for me. I ordered a tray but I never use it.

Oh no. The only reason that my doctor wants me to increase my potassium intake is because the last blood test showed that it is too low. I have been too careful about the potassium in my diet and I have not been ingesting enough

Sorry I don't know why my reply did not come after panc's message to me, even though I used the Reply right after it.
