Stage 3 Kidney Disease and Diet: What can I eat?

Posted by carnes @carnes, Jun 11, 2018

It seems there is very little you can eat that is healthy for the Kidneys. The web site Davida has plenty of food on it but contradicts what other sources say. Anyone know anything for breakfast, lunch and dinner that does not have any sugar or flour bodies the obvious boring or bland foods good for Kidneys and I’m allergic to sugar of any kind of sweetener and flour. Thank you.

Calling all those with CKD! I've never had "tummy trouble" but recently a couple of episodes of "indigestion" have occurred. I know we're supposed to avoid antacids but is there anything "kidney safe" to take OCCASIONALLY for heartburn? TIA.

@kamama94 On the list that I was given of acceptable and unacceptable OTC products for most patients, the following are acceptable for heartburn:
Pepcid AC
Zantac 150
Prilosec
Prevacid

The instructions for Tums, Mylanta, and Maalox say to take two hours before or 4 hours after transplant medications, so I assume they are safe for kidneys too.

I would suspect these would also be safe for kidneys since those of us on immunosuppressants are prone to kidney problems, that is something they keep a close watch for. I heard of one transplant center that actually told their liver transplant patients that they probably would eventually need a kidney transplant! Thankfully, MGH keeps a very watchful eye and makes adjustments to keep my creatinine down and my kidneys happy.
Of course, you should run these by your own doctor, particularly if you have been told to avoid antacids.

You mention Tums, they are calcium carbonate which my doctor said not to take if you have kidney stones. I’m not familiar of the difference between what can be used for Stones and the various types of kidney disease.
Good luck,
Jake

@jakedduck1 Ahh, then there's the difference. Plus of course, this could easily change if I did develop kidney problems. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, hoping that I do not. At my age I suspect I would not get a transplant, I would eventually be put on dialysis for what would be the rest of my life.

@kamama94 I use peppermint (tea or candy) and ginger (a small piece of candied ginger or tea) for heartburn. I also make sure to keep well hydrated, eat small portions, and eat frequently; this seems to reduce heartburn for me.

@jakedduck1 I was instructed to take calcium citrate rather than any other calcium due to my kidney disease and oxalate isssues.

@kamama94 I should add that I just discovered that I have a small hiatal hernia which is the source of some of my heartburn. Knowing this makes it easier for me to power through. It is so confusing when you suddenly have symptoms and do not know what is causing the difficulty.
