Mysterious shortness of breath: What has helped you?

I will try to make this as short as possible, but this has been going on for over 5 years, so it might be farily long. 

Beginning in summer of 2012, I began having shortness of breath (SOB) with no other symptoms. I felt a constant need to yawn, and every few breaths wouldn't satisfy the SOB. I would take a deep breath, and felt like it would get "stuck" before satisfying the air hunger feeling. About every 3-5 deep breaths would satisfy it, only for it to return a minute later. 

I got an endoscopy and other tests done, which revealed that I had some esophageal erosion due to acid reflux and a slight hiatal hernia and was diagnosed with GERD. I had always have bad heartburn, so I was prescribed with Prilosec, which I have been taking daily since them. I've tried stopping it a few times but the reflux always comes back a lot worse. 

Lung tests and x-rays were normal. Heart tests normal. Blood test revealed a slight anemia but otherwise pretty normal. 

I did some research reading forums where someone suggested taking vitamin B-12. Strangely, I took it and the SOB disappeared almost instantly. However, it only lasted a few days for it to return just as bad. I then started taking an iron supplement, which again made the SOB disappear quickly- same thing; symptom returned days later. 

After further research, I came across a breathing exercise method called the Buteyko method. Essentially you do a lot of breath holding to build up CO2 and reduce breathing as the theory is that I had chronic hyperventilation causing too much CO2 to exit my body. After applying the method and reducing my breathing, the SOB disappeared after only 2 days and I felt completely normal. I continued the method a few more days then no longer felt the need to pursue the exercises. I was normal for a whole year when the SOB once again returned with some chest tightness. I applied the method again and the symptom went away, this time with a little more effort; after about 3 weeks. I included physical exercise which also helped with my breathing. 

After that, I was normal for about 2 years. I mistakenly stopped or at least slowed down exercise and the SOB returned once again. I applied the method and began running for exercise but the SOB kept getting worse. It got so bad, I had multiple panic attacks and the feeling of completely empty lungs with the inability to satisfy it with deep breaths. I had to stop exercise altogether, apply the Buteyko method and do breathing exercises very carefully with very light and slow exercise. This helped, but it took many weeks for the SOB to improve. Then, it was almost normal when over a year ago as I was running, I couldn't get a deep breath to satisfy exercise-induced SOB. I have had SOB continuously since then (a year and a half). 

I once again started doing breathing exercises and slowly building up physical exercise, but I can't do any prolonged cardio activity because the SOB gets to a point where deep breathing will not satisfy it. While the breathing exercises have helped, they have had very little effect compared to previous efforts. It seems that every time the symptom returned, greater effort yields few results.

I suspect there is something, some underlying cause that is causing the SOB that has alluded me this entire time. 

So for the past few months to a year, the SOB is worse on some days, better on others, but never gone. There's no rhyme or reason or pattern for it. It's just there, sometimes affecting my sleep. I sometimes can't get a deep breath to satisfy it every now and then, but for the most part, a big gulp of air will satisfy it. But it returns seconds to minutes later. It's as though every breath doesn't deliver what it's supposed to, the SOB builds up, and then I have to take a big gulp of air to get rid of the feeling, pattern repeats. My breathing pattern is normal, however. I don't feel like anything physical is happening, but sometimes it feels like my airways and nostrils are slightly inflamed due to allergies, but when I don't feel inflammation the SOB is still there. 

Recent lung function tests show normal- I don't have asthma, or any other problems with my lungs. Heart tests are normal though I did have about a two week bout of heart palpitations which came and went. Haven't had any for a while- it just mysteriously started happening then stopped. Blood tests are normal, though tests always show a slight elevation of biliruben which my doc thinks is Gilbert's disease. 

I don't have sleep apnea (normal test), bloody oxygenation is normal, heart rate normal. 

I recently saw local naturopath (since mainstream docs aren't able to help) who immediately suspected a liver problem when I described my SOB, possibly liver inflammation. He used an electrodermal testing machine to test his theory which did seem to show a problem with my liver and gallbladder. He gave me digestive enzymes and a gallbladder formula to help clear a bile duct clog, thus reducing liver inflammation. He also determined with the machine that I have an egg sensitivity so I've been avoiding eggs. 

Been taking this and avoiding eggs for a couple of months, but there has been no noticeable improvement. Everything else is normal. Emotionally I'm normal- no anxiety, depression, etc. The SOB seems to be the only symptom of something, but always comes back worse, until a year and half ago when it came back and has remained since. I feel like I shouldn't have to do breath holding exercises every day just to maintain my breathing well enough to do every day things. 

Does anyone have any idea of a possible underlying cause?

2021/2022 UPDATE:
Since my original post about 3-1/2 years ago, a lot has happened, so I’d like to update the post to share with others who come across this what I’ve done since then.

I have maintained a weekly Buteyko method breathing exercise regimen where I do a few of these breathing exercises 3-4 times a week in the morning. This, in combination with daily light to moderate exercise (specifically weight lifting, with 1 or 2 days a week of walking and light jogging), I feel has kept the air hunger symptoms tolerable and manageable. I have mostly good days with some not-so-good days, but doing a breathing exercise and knowing that it’ll get better again helps me get through those times.

I also have sinus inflammation which can exacerbate the symptoms, but I’ve also managed this, which in turn reduces the severity of the air hunger symptoms.

So, while I haven’t found a cure nor is the problem completely gone, I have been able to maintain normalcy in daily life and manage the symptoms through the strategies I described.

This discussion remains active, alive and well through the comments section where others who have similar symptoms have shared what has helped them as well as suggestions for possible solutions to explore.

I have similar symptoms to this original post. SOB and something like air hunger. I tend to have to take 4-5 breaths before I can take a deep breath to satisfy the air hunger. I recently went to a clinic a week ago for a cough and excess mucus. They prescribed me with antibiotics(cefdinir lupin). And I guess I noticed the SOB to appear a day or so after I had started the medicine. So I wasn't sure if it was a side effect of the cefdinir or not. I checked the prescription directions sheet and SOB wasn't listed on there. So I went into the clinic again about two days ago and they did a breathing test where you breath through a tube that has vapor medicine going through it for about five minutes and that didn't really help. So then they took a chest xray and said everything was healthy and that maybe it looked like I have slightly inflamed airways but they weren't sure about that. They checked my breathing for wheezing and such and said everything was healthy there and after that they told me there wasn't much else they could do about finding out the cause and said the next place to go is the ER if symptoms worsen.. But here I am two days later and I'm still having SOB and air hunger. They also prescribed me an inhaler on my second visit and that doesn't seem to help me at all.. So now I'm just confused as to what is causing it to happen. Wondering if I should stop taking the antibiotic cefdinir or not but I only have about 3 pills left of it.

I have yellow runny stool, TMI lol... and when I have to go I have to go.... I really dont think any of this is stress related. Although, I do have tons of stress and anxiety over these issues. It is crappy. Literally... weird enough the last few days i have felt hardly any breathing issues... knock on wood.... it pisses me off bc i cant figure out why the hell i cant breathe. Cant find a trigger..... thats what makes me believe it isnt anxiety. It happens whenever.

I am not hyperventilating as when i feel this way, I watch and feel how i breathe. Always with my stomach, although i do mouth breathe sometimes, but not deep or too fast usually.... My anxiety dont help any though.. why do i feel so much better now? Makes no sense. Lol....still scared for it coming back...bc it is baaad at times. Ahhhhhh. Lol

@aea1205 - Good morning. This sounds like an infection. Your stools should not be runny and they should be brown. Wither your PCP or GI doctor need to see you and run some tests. I'm glad that you are feeling better with your breathing but you really need to take care of your stomach issues. Have you noticed that after you have any dairy your stomach problems are worse? Have you considered Lactose intolerance?

I've not been on this group, but there are many different topics that might fit your symptoms.
You've not mentioned anything about your diet or daily exercise. I had Lactose intolerance since childhood and a few years ago it lindly went away, well mostly. My symptoms were similar to yours after I ate dairy products.
Do you have a PCP that you like to call for further testing or a GI doctor?

Hello everybody.

I've been reading all of your posts since the beginning of this thread. (Btw excuse my grammatical errors couse i'm from Croatia 🙂
So,i've been having the same issues since the October of 2018.
I'm constantly having this urge to take a deep breath,and when i go for it,majority of the time i can't do it,it's like it's blocked somewhere,i can't even locate where is the "blockage",but even when i successfully take a deep breath,the sensation is back after 30 seconds or less.
I do have anxiety problems,although i'm really laid back person,but i have some kind of health anxiety disorder and kind of fear of death,more then some.
But i didn't connect this problem with the anxiety that i have. It's feels different,couse it's every single day here,for the past 9 months. During the happy days,and sad days,it's always here.Some days are tolerable,and some days i kinda don't have the will to do everyday chors.
So,i've went to the doctor,and he did some blood test,spirometry test,and some strange blood test,and all came fine. So he said he didn't want to do any other tests,that nothing major is happening,and suggested i do some breathing excersises.
I've done it all during the last 9 months(i am a smoker,10 cigarettes a day),but i quit smoking for 4 months,and it was all the same.I've done every breathing technique that exist,nothing helped.I also suffer from silent reflux,and i've tried with the meds to stop the acid and change my diet,but nothing helped.
I'm really struggling to find the what is wrong with me,and how to fix that.
Nothing helped at all. I've been on anxiety meds,reflux meds,alergy meds,tried breathing excersises,diet change... Nothing helped one bit. There are days when i feel better,but it is still here,every day.
I really don't have any more ideas what i can do to investigate or try.
I'm hoping someone is gonna come with some ideas or treatments for this.

@hrvoje1108- Welcome to Mayo Connect. It sounds as if you are really struggling. It takes longer than four months for your lungs to establish their new normal and the damage that you have done by smoking is irreversible. All smokers get emphysema. You are not able to inhale all the air you need and exhale all the CO 2 that you have to.
You need to see a pulmonologist for more precise testing . Do you know where you can go to get a name for one?

I am wondering if anyone else has a slight tightness or pressure in their chest alongside the SOB. I have no cough or wheeze . I also feel a bit of pain in my back but it could be muscular (carrying a heavy -backpqck everyday on walking commute). Unfortunately my anxiety over this is so bad. My blood work came back normal except for a slightly low RBC. I am focusing on a nutrient dense diet but am getting depressed and anxious over this situation .

I too am getting such bad anxiety over this issue too. I just want the SOB to be gone so badly.

I suggest everyone quit googleing. I just googled ocd and read the symptoms now i find myself aware im blinking. This is not good. Anxiety can make really stupid shit happen. Only listen to doctors.
