Osteoporosis treatment or strontium citrate?

Is reclast a safe treatment for osteoporosis I have not done anything so far except strontium citrate?

There’s not enough research to know if strontium fights osteoporosis. Also, the FDA doesn’t regulate supplements in the same way as prescription drugs, so it's not possible to know if if they are safe or work well or even how much of the main ingredient they contain.

If you want to take a strontium supplement, it is recommended to ask your doctor first.

Thanks for the article. What makes even more of a bugger on top of having Celiacs is I am lactose intolerant, so dairy doesn't set well with me, which of course, is full of calcium. I will check this article out. Thanks again.

I have the same problem, @greff. I have somewhat advanced osteoporosis but am also lactose intolerant. As with most lactose intolerant people, I am able to eat aged cheeses like cheddar, swiss, and the hard ones like parmesan, romano, padano, and asiago. I do miss being able to have ricotta in lasagna though. When I make pizza, which is pretty rare, I use provolone instead of mozzarella. We like it more now, it has more flavor.

Hi all. I‘’m a bit confused - some of the comments I read talk about research, do you really think that you can do enough research & separate fact from fiction and will know better than a physician who went through undergrad, med school, residency & perhaps a fellowship? I think the bigger problem is a lack of confidence in the medical & research world. To those that comment on the side effects of the meds, has your physician reported it? If not, why not. Why isn’t your doc altering your meds when you complain? I feel all of your pain as I have been there & continue to travel down that road but, I trust my medical team to be watching out for me. This is your life, do what’s best 🙂

@jmweissier I tend to agree with you, most of the time. Unfortunately, there are some doctors who do not stay very well informed, and who may venture into areas beyond their ken rather than refer a patient to a specialist. If a doctor resents research I have done I tend to be very wary of them - obviously they are not very confident of their own abilities to know what they are talking about.
Right now I am pretty confident of almost all of my doctors, except for my PCP, but I do still research so I can understand what they are saying and possibly contribute to it, as with which pharmaceutical I might take for a problem. Right now I am trying to decide on what I will take for my osteoporosis. The endo recommends Reclast and my PCP also thinks that's a good option. The dilemma of what pharmaceutical to take for osteoporosis is the most difficult one I have known. Difficult and frightening.

@cireland As I said, it won't be until after April. I have a friend who has done Reclast though and has had no problems from it.

Hi @greff, I also have osteopenia and my doc told me I need to take 1200 mg calcium a day. I tried it for a couple of weeks but it made me so constipated I stopped taking it and really try to eat more foods with calcium and drink more milk which I rarely did before I was diagnosed. @johnbishop Hi John Dr put me on 1200 mg calcium but told me to take one in morning and 1 at night I haven't had any constipation .Also about gabapentin Dr started me on 1 at night 3 day Didn't work so now 4 at night sleep good and 3;day this seems to work for me Linda

Over a 7-yr period, dr had to increase my dose almost every 6-9 months. Then I developed a horrible allergic reaction which took prednisone to get under control. Those drugs are so tough on our bodies!! I hope you can handle them ok.

Is there some reason you don't want to try supplements? Have you ever tried Vitamins K2 (mk4 mk7) and D3? Hav you tried magnesium and calcium? Boron? Any of the above or all? While you are making up our mind you could be doing this. Also, if you don't have a family history of breast cancer, you could be trying low-dose estrogen and progesterone.

I know everyone will groan when I say this - but going off sugar is very good for osteoporosis also. Sugar is white death. Google it and you will see I am right about sugar and osteoporosis.

Those pharmaceutical drugs cause as bad or worse than estrogen.

If your doctor cannot discuss the above with you intelligently, how about a functional doctor, naturopath, or nutritionist? It might be money well spent. Heck, it might save your life. You are so right to take your time making this decision! That support group on Facebook is very good - you might get answers there. The exact name is Osteoporosis Natural Remedies. There is another group called Osteoporosis Natural and Rx Remedies or something similar to that. The first group is very active and people will help you if you mention your struggle. Also, there is a search feature to the left of the page and you can look up all the things you are interested in. There is a nutritionist who posts there all the time.

Most of all - I wish us all good luck - no matter what path we decide to take. Only you knows what is best for your body.

Another way to get around the constipation is to take Milk of Magnesia every night before bed. It is safe to do this, according to my infectious disease doctor.

It is better to get your calcium from food anyway. I do a combination. I add up the amount of calcium I have consumed during the day (there are apps for that as well) and then I only take the calcium I need.

Vitamin D3 and Calcium is a good start - but you also REALLY need vitamin K2 (mk4 mk7) and magnesium - and a little boron (3 mg twice a day) helps. The K2 makes sure your calcium goes into your bones - not into your arteries or kidneys. It's VERY important. Look up "The Ultimate K2 Resource" by Chris Masterjohn. It's a fast, easy read and it explains SO much.

@parrotqueen I take K2 and D3 as part of my supplements for my peripheral neuropathy. I ran all my supplements by my Mayo primary care doc who sent them to the pharmacist for review ☺
