Strange neurological symptoms - myoclonic jerks
I am a 35 year old female and for the last few months I have been having myoclonic like jerks. The only problem is I don’t have them only when I’m falling asleep. I have jerks in my hands, neck, body etc. any time I’m tired. My hands will trimble and jerk almost to the point I can’t use them. My legs jerk head to the side etc. Even my son notices me jerking when we sit together on the couch in the evening watching tv and he’s 8. He asked me why I was jerking so much. I also have myoclonic jerks when I’m falling asleep. Also I am tired a lot so tired I could almost fall asleep standing up. It is almost impossible to keep myself awake. The worst times are early in the mornings between 8 and 11 and early evening between 6 and 8. Then I can’t sleep. I am up half the night sometimes until 330 am. Also when I’m driving my brain will just zone out. I half to shake my head to refocus or pinch myself. I don’t know what the problem could be and I dislike going to neurologists.

Hi @nikkyuze, I have read about the Symptoms, it is strange symptoms; however, visiting the doctor will help saving time and costs. Many abnormal primary symptoms might means abnormality in functions of any of the body part. People used to be advised taking blood test each year so they become able to get familiar with the normality and the abnormality of the substance included in the blood stream (concentration) such as Na, CL, K, and so on..... Many medical topics show that the abnormality of any substance could lead to many negative issues and might developed to serious diseases. I wish you feel better soon and enjoy your time with your son!
I recently had blood work done. All electrolytes are fine as well as other lab values
Hello @nikkyuze
This sounds like a very distressing symptom - I'm so sorry that you are experiencing this. I believe that the best way to get an answer and treatment for this disorder is to see a neurologist.
Have you seen a neurologist previously for some other problem?
Perhaps talking with your primary care doctor would be a good first step in coming up with an answer.
I wish you well and I look forward to hearing from you again and knowing how you are progressing in getting treatment for this.
Teresa
That is great. tow opinions better than one and two tests better than one. Seeing neurologist as a friend advised is very good. Also seeing a counselor is a good idea too. How amazing life affects our physical symptoms. Hope you feeling better!
Please make an appointment with a Movement Disorder Neurologist. Get this checked out. I have tremors in my neck, mouth and sometimes hands. This is called Dystonia. I have dystonia in my neck, oralmandibular area, and hands. Mine is called Focal where yours may be Generalized. Get a diagnosis.
Again, not any neurologist, only a MOVEMENT DISORDER NEUROLOGIST! Good Luck!
This has nothing to do with emotions or troubles in your life. This is a brain disease. The basal ganglia of my brain is putting out too much aceytcolene, a neurotransmitter where your nerves talk to your muscles. I know this disease like the back of the hand. Stress can aggravate Dystonia, but does not cause this condition. Mine is hereditary. My mother had dystonia along with 10 of my uncles, aunts and cousins who suffer from this disease!
I have a type of spasticity and my skeletal muscles contract to the point of pain, but mostly I can't walk more than a few feet and have been living 24/7 in a recliner since February 2013 and nothing helped ,and even Botox did nothing! My condition is due to a cold turkey withdrawal from lorazapam! Any suggestions?
@aarniek
I am so sorry to hear of this spasticity. That must be very uncomfortable. I would encourage you to read some of the discussions on Mayo Connect that deal with others who live with Chronic Pain. Here is the link, https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/pain/tab/discussions/?pg=2#group-285-activitystream
Also in our Stroke & Cerebrovascular Diseases discussion groups there are several people who speak of spasticity following a stroke and they discuss what they have found to be helpful.
I have spasticity as well due to a neurological problem. I have found that physical therapy, stretching exercises, massages and heat all help (but certainly do not eliminate the problem all together).
Have physicians, or physical therapists offered you any medications, exercises or treatments that might be helpful even if they do not alleviate the problem completely? Do you have any exercise and/or stretching plan in place that you practice on a daily basis?
I look forward to hearing from you.
Teresa
When you visit a Movement Disorder Specialist, they will inform you what they can do to help your condition, especially if you get a good Movement Disorder Specialist. I had to get drunk and on KLONOPIN to get married. My neck was RETRO and stuck turning Left! The pain in my neck was beyond imaginable. I was in extreme pain! My condition is focal whereas yours may be generalized. Please get help and REMEMBER, YOU ARE NOT ALONE! I used BOTOX until I built up antibodies. I am now on MYOBLOCK and KLONOPIN. ARTANE may help, but it made me shaky. It may help you. I am hoping you get relief.
