Reactive Hypoglycemia & Chronic Sinusitis

Posted by danny95 @danny95, Feb 25, 2018

Can anyone offer any advice or information?
Everyday is constant struggle, After I eat any food with the slightest bit of sugar i gain all of the below symptoms;
-Lightheadness (almost like a dream state)
-Sinus Pressure
-Lethergy
-Heart palpitations
-Increased Phlegm (Post nasal drip)
-Gritty/itchy eyes
-Blurred Vision
If I keep consuming sugar I will get a sinus infection ive had 3 in the space of 5 months in which ive had antibotics and steroid drops to treat each time but the only difference is it turns my green phlegm back to thick white. I still get the puffy checks, sinus pressure, fatigue and so on.
I began the Keto diet to try and cut out sugar but then i get symptoms of hypoglycemia from lack of sugar.
It might be worth mentioning that i also keep getting thrush and have had antheltes foot in the 5 months this has been happening. Ive also had a few instances of random shooting pains down my legs and in my knees and 2 or 3 times an intense stabbing pain under my left rib which lasted a few minutes. (Im not sure if any of that is related)
Im desperate its effecting every aspect of my life relationships, work performance/Attendence and motivation.

Male, 23 years old. No instances of any other illness before September 2017

To Whom It May Concern: After developing ketoacidosis secondary to diabetes, I cannot help but discourage anyone from using a "keto" diet. It just is not logical to me.

Ketoacidosis has nothing to do with the keto diet.

Sorry everyone, I haven't logged on since posting.
I still struggle daily with sinus pressure, post nasal drip and fatigue and currently have thrush again.
My findings are symptoms are alot worse with bad diet. I have had a CT scan wereby the ENT said he can only see inflammation with no known cause, he suggested allergies but i don't think so. I purchased a blood glucose reader but my blood glucose always remained in normal range, even after large sugary meals so I knocked it on the head and ditched the reader.
I'm still left baffled as to what is causing my struggle, I use steroid treatment everyday with pretty much no effect. I'm confident that after sugary snacks my sinus pressure is worse, I wen't to see an immunologist whom done a few allergy tests which all come back negative.

I have Sjrogen's syndrome and have the exact same problem. It took them years to test me for it...The only thing you can do is change your diet because doctors are clueless and can not help you. Also, one allergist said I have many allergies...yet I was tested by another one and they said I had no allergies. So allergy testing is not very reliable. Heart palps can be an indication of food allergy. Start a food journal. Sometimes I don't react for 2 days to something I ate. I am 62 and have had this since I was in my 30's. One thing that does help me is to drink a carrot juice and/or a green juice drink daily. I bought a hurom juicer and it's really easy to juice carrots with it. I use a Vitamix for my green juice. Vitamin A is supposed to help with mucus membranes.

@nursemaven Hi, I would pay thousands to do that if it meant this would end, I don't know who to contact about getting several specialists to evaluate me

I’m so sorry for your ordeal, but you need to consult with doctors and get a diagnosis and a treatment to alleviate your symptoms. You are in my prayers and thoughts. Good luck to you !!

Would be nice if it didn’t take so long dealing with a the NHS, 3/4 month wait to see a specialist. I have been to ENT multiple times, immunology now waiting to see an endocrinologist :/

I have always had post nasal drip but now it is chronic and my eyes (recently cataract surgery) are itchy and blurry. What is a glucose meter? I have some probiotic tablets but not L Sakei. I live in a condo so cannot break into walls. It does seem to be an unusually heavy dust season in the Pacific Northwest. How does one find an endocrinologist?

Thank you for the advice I’ll give it a try

@danny95 & @susu2 I’m a type 1 diabetic since 1975. I’ve had lots of experience with hypoglycemia over the years but I haven’t heard of reactive hypoglycemia. I have had chronic sinus issues all my life but never made any connection between the two conditions. @susu2, a glucomemter is a blood sugar testing device. You can buy them over the counter and you will also need a lancing device, lancets, and test strips. The test strips are expensive, but the rest of the gear is cheap. Depending on your insurance coverage, it may be better to get a prescription from your Dr. An endocrinologist would be all over that. If you need to find one, you might need a referral from your primary physician. If you use a larger health system that has multiple specialties, you could check there under endocrinologists.

Hi, sorry for the delayed response. I’m still struggling and trying to make the connection awaiting a 16 week referral to an endocrinologist

So sorry for the confusion @vikkr. My post below was meant for @danny95 .

Hi and Welcome! The thrush especially - along with the pains you describe - suggest autoimmune to me, not reactive hypoglycemia. (Specifically Sjogren's) The next time you have thrush, or before that, perhaps ask about seeing a rheumatologist?

I have read about Sjogrens and wonder if that is what I’m struggling with. Are symptoms of this auto immune disorder typically worse with higher.sugar intake? I’ll will ask to be referred later this week. Problem is with the NHS it can be upto 16 weeks to see a specialist

Dear Danny, You have host of problems and I consoul .I need to ask if you have had a good work-up by a good physician? It seems you do have some metabolic upset...e.g., sinus, etc. But there is a reason for your recurrent symptoms, it just has to be found. If trying to reduce sugar via Keto diet, maybe there is another way to maintain your blood sugar besides going cold turkey white and processed food sugar? Can you find someone to help you or can you dig a bit deeper on your own..e.g. slower releases of sugar by complex carbohydrates? Maybe a dietitian?

ive tried it all and it’s difficult to make the connection :/

I do have Reactive Hypoglycemia and eating most carbohydrates such as sugar or chips or rice, etc., makes my sinuses inflamed. I'm 62 and it took me a long time to realize that is the issue. Also if my sinuses are inflamed I will get a migraine on top of the sinus infection. I bought a glucose meter to check my blood sugar and I had my proof my blood sugar was all out of whack. I would suggest getting one....Accu-Check by Roche seems to be a good one.

I looked here because yet again, my sinus is clogging with yellow mucus while I’m having a day of hypoglycemia.
My experience is the same one you received. “ we’re looking at multiple areas of expertise, so yada , yada. It’s true that with hypoglycemia goes ,headache, sinus mucus, agitation, brain fog, muscle pain, nightmares, and the desire to shake a doctor, because they don’t listen and try to pass you off to another specialty. The biggest downfall of the medical profession is tunnel vision to their particular specialty. Perhaps there’s a conference call needed here. WE’re NOT CRAZY. ITS HAPPENING. !!
