Right side daily headache and no diagnose

Posted by mima2018 @mima2018, Feb 4, 2018

I've been having a daily headache since October 2016. Have tried several neurologists, physical therapy, chiropractor, acupuncture, dentist and no one had given me a diagnose. I have tried so many different pills and botox. No help. I have a constant aching pain on the top right of the head, above and around ear, jaw, shoulder and neck. Im considering mayo clinic as the last resort. Anyone dealing with this type of headache? Any suggestions? MRI, CT scan and blood work or all normal. It all started while being extremely stressed and overloaded with work.

My headaches are definitely made worse by neck and shoulder muscle spasms. My muscles in those areas are often like ropes. Trigger point injections help in addition to Botox. My last Botox doc did hit up the muscles in my neck and shoulders. For me it helped a lot. Only thing is if the doc isn’t comfortable using Botox in those areas and uses it in too many muscles, it effects the use of your neck. It paralyzes the muscles injected, so if a lot of neck muscles don’t work you can’t hold your head up in certain positions. I only had this happen once, but it made it so I had to hold my head with my ponytail while leaning over to brush my teeth. It was fine standing or sitting, only a problem leaning over. Make sure your doc has used it in those areas. When mine knew what he was doing it worked great and helped a lot.

My shoulders and neck are always tight especially my right shoulder feels like a rock. I have been exercising to strengthen muscles for the past thee months and I still feel the same. Muscle relaxers don’t work either. The doctor did botox on me on my shoulders neck and head and it made me worse. The pain is always on my right side from my shoulders neck to right side of head. What is weird is that once in a while my right side clears, no pain, but I have a stiff left shoulder with a left top headache. I haven’t found a medicine that works yet for me.

Botox actually tightens muscles, which may be why it made it worse. Let me get some info that I found and send it to you and see if it might help!

Hi,
Dear, I have read your post, and what come to mind first is how old are you? No need to tell everyone about age, but the thing that I kept it and marked as valuable information and getting it from my experience working in twenty hospitals is that elderly suffering form headache which is related to one side of the face penetrating into and to the shoulder mentioned as coming from heart problem. Our visiting to doctors might keep us saving more pain or sever pain and help us to be familiar with what would alarm us suddenly and kidnap us from our normal daily life. Wish you good luck!

I had a close friend with what you are describing, pain on only right side. It ended up that she was holding the phone with her head and right shoulder, just a thought. I also get a lot of help from physical therapy when they work on the muscles and then ultra sound that area. Sorry the other things didn’t work. I also have had a lot of pain right after Botox sometimes, not sure why. Then it works well other times. I have had it done many times and talked to the dr about the neck being weak afterwards (twice), he said it was possible.

Here are some other people talking about neck pain after Botox in their neck/shoulders. It’s not for everyone.

This is from the Botox website, concerning medical use of Botox.

Botox is a neurotoxin derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Botox is used medically to treat certain muscular conditions, and cosmetically to remove wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing muscles. It is made from a neurotoxin called botulinum toxin that is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.

Hi @mima2018
Mayo Clinic's top-ranked team of neurologists diagnoses and treats more than 500 neurological conditions, including many rare or complex disorders. I personally can't recommend a specific neurologist, but can tell you that they work together as a team, even between campuses. So while you may start by seeing one neurologist, you're getting the expertise of a team.

Here's a link to the contact numbers to request an appointment http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63

That is great to hear. I may go up north again. Do you know if they do the same with Rheumatologists. Often many auto-immune diseases are listed as rare and not a great deal of research or knowledge of potential causes or even varied treatments. Symtoms and Treatments seem to be the same for just about all of them like Lupus, etc. I go by my experience the last 5 years going for second, third and fourth opinions as they varied and that is why I never wanted them to know what the last doctor said. It just showed me how very little doctors know about some of these where tests are not always conclusive and they vary.

Hi mima, I’m one of the people Colleen tagged. I do have chronic headaches every day. I have had them for years though. Mine has been diagnosed as coming from the vertebrae in my neck, C4-5, C5-6 now. When I was younger and now I know I have migraines.

A few things I’ve learned along the way, if you use over-the-counter pain medicine like Excedrin, Fioricet (prescription), and other meds, you will develop rebound headaches. It ends up a vicious cycle with the headaches get worse and the only way to get out of it is stop taking the medicines daily. The Botox works for tension headaches and migraines. I know I do have migraines because migraine medications work for me. Mine does tend to go from the right back of my neck through the top of my head and out my right eye. But it’s a migraine.

Sorry I don’t have better answers for you specially.

@jenapower I’m glad migrane medications are working for you. The doc has given me so many migrane pills, nasal sprays, and yet haven’t found anything heat helps. I don’t have nausea or sensitivity to light or noise. I feel like mine is not a migrane.
