Are there any other pre-liver transplant caregivers out there?

Posted by jodeej @jodeej, Jan 29, 2018

Hi,
I'm JoDee and my husband is on the registry waiting for a liver transplant. I'm feeling stressed and would love to have someone to talk to that gets what is going on with us. We live 5 hours from Rochester, so I can't attend any of the support groups there and there aren't any near us. Any suggestions?
Thank you!

Caregiver is a difficult job! Make sure to give yourself some "me" time with friends, soaking bath or reading a book. You have to go through EVERYTHING your husband is going through, PLUS you are responsible for all of the medications, you have have to learn new terminology, you have to talk to the doctors, you have to be the advocate, the list goes on and on. Keep reaching out to find a caregiver buddy to lean on when you need it! You're doing a great job!

@newlifesociety, Thank you for sharing these good suggestions!
I want to add: As a caregiver, you will be taught and coached right along with your patient recipient about each detail that you will need to know. When I had my transplant, the transplant nurses taught us in the hospital as I recovered. It was a very complete and organized pre-discharge process. Then after discharge, we were assigned a post transplant nurse, who prepared us for a return to our home. I don't know if all transplant programs are this well organized. I transplanted at Mayo Rochester

Hi everyone. My husband was just recently listed for liver transplant He is pretty low on the list right now but will get exception points after 6 month waiting period. He had the TACE procedure recently with partial response and course of action is now to do reimaging in 3 months. We are both very anxious about what can happen during this 3 month period as he was getting regular screenings prior to the HCC diagnosis and nothing was seen in the 3 months prior to the diagnosis. I agree this is all so overwhelming and would love to connect with others who understand what what we are going through as well. We also live 5 hours from transplant center and my husband will need to temp relocate once he is higher on the list. I will need to stay behind to continue working up until he is called for transplant and will join him. I am a planner so the uncertainty of when this will be makes it difficult. I’m thinking ahead and guess I will go to work everyday with a packed suitcase once he is higher on list? Are there any caregivers out there with current similar situation or post liver transplant recipient who experienced similar situation?

@28snash, I'm sending my love to you and your husband. I wish you both continued strength as you continue toward transplant. When we were going thru the beginning process, and confused and frightened my doctor told me the following : "Think of it in terms of when you are getting ready to go on a big trip or a vacation. You have to pack your suitcases, and then loading everything in the van (he said station wagon) so that you will be ready to pull out of the driveway first thing in the morning." I always liked that image. I think you are doing a good job of planning and packing!
Keep in touch.

Hi JoDee. I'm Andrea. My husband is currently inpatient at Methodist. We are very close to being put on the transplant list. He was admitted here Thursday night due to taking a bad turn in his health status. We live in the Northwest metro, about 2 hours from Rochester.

@marynlogan, Welcome to Mayo Connect.
Andrea, my name is Rosemary. I will be thinking of you and your husband. From my own experience and time spent in Mayo Methodist, I know that he is getting excellent care. I went thru my pre-transplant evaluation while I was an inpatient there.
I am a liver/kidney recipient, and I am available on Connect anytime if you need anyone to talk to, or have any questions. You can also send a Private message by clicking on the envelope on top right of this page.

Hugs and Hope,
Rosemary

@28snash Sorry I've been MIA recently, we got to go babysit our grandson for the weekend! 🙂
I'm also a planner so the waiting is making me crazy. I compare it to waiting for a baby to be born, but you don't have a due date! Lol I'm glad you found a reasonable priced place to rent. We have 2 dogs, but are lucky to have friends and family that will care for them for us. I'll keep you up to date of any new news!

@rosemarya I have yet to have a bag packed, but I do have lists on the bulletin board. We went to our daughter and son-in-laws to babysit over the weekend and we did pack extra with us in case we got the call while we were there. I realized over the weekend that I can't make trips to see my family unless my husband wants to come along because it would take to long for me to get home, get him and then get to Mayo. That saddened me, but I know it's only for the short term.
We will get through this one day at a time!

@newlifesociety I am still looking for my caregiver buddy. I am going to ask a woman I know out for coffee or supper this week!
