B-6 vitamin danger!

Posted by Lynsorensen @lynsorensen, Dec 11, 2017

With the assistance of a neurologist at Mayo Clinic, I have almost completely eliminated the uncontrolled muscle spasms now. First and foremost: beware of taking multi-vitamin capsules that have B6 listed. B-6 overdosage (which is contained in every multivitamin I found in stores and on the internet) can cause loss of muscle control and spasms in some people. So can gluten found in many foods so now I am also gluten free. I now work out with a personal trainer 3 days a week and do water aerobics another 2 days. Got off gabapentin and also clonazepam. Using CBD oil capsules each morning (no more opioids or chemicals) and using a CBD topical ointment to rub on my leg muscles each night. He says I don't need him anymore! And I don't. No more shaking or muscle cramps or pain. Still a little numbness but that is receding also.

Hello. I have bad bilateral sensory neuropathy in feet and ankles for eighteen years. I recently learned that I have a non-conservative mutation in my SDHB gene (which is responsible for a pheochromocytoma I had many years ago). For years, I've had elevated serum B6 even though I don't take B6 supplement. Could the mutated SDHB gene be responsible for my elevated B6 and/or neuropathy? Many thanks for àny clues.

Hello @margaret10 -- Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I'm hoping other members may be able to help you with your search. It is good to be learning as much as you can about your condition. Here are a few articles I found that may be helpful.

Disorders affecting vitamin B6 metabolism -- https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/jimd.12060
Elevated B6 Levels and Peripheral Neuropathies -- https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18754531/
Linus Pauling Institute - Vitamin B6 -- https://lpi.oregonstate.edu/mic/vitamins/vitamin-B6

Have your doctors suggested any possible treatments for your elevated B6 levels?

Also be cautious about taking Turmeric supplements as they raise B6 levels. I was taking them for SFN until the neurologist told me how potentially dangerous they were in terms of B6 toxicity.

Please provide the name of the neurologist that told you that turmeric supplements can cause B6 toxicity, or a citation to a publication that says the same. Thank you.

@margaret, I read online that tumeric contains 0.122 mg. of B6 which I think is negligible. Just FYI Helen

I was taking 500 mg of turmeric and my vitamin B6 levels shot up. I only saw this neurologist once quite a while ago and he adamantly told me to stop the Turmeric because it elevates Vitamin B6 levels. He did not give me any further information because this was one of those 5 minute appointments that are meaningless I no longer see him and his name has slipped my mind.

I eat a healthy diet that is high in foods that contain vitamin B6 and also some of the other B vitamins. I don’t need to take anything else.

Hi @gman007 - I agree that each person should discuss with their doctor before taking a lot of any vitamin/supplement. If there is any question, it's always a good idea to discuss it with your doctor or a pharmacist and know what you are taking. The problem with B6 is that it is different than other B vitamins when it comes to being water soluble. Unlike most B vitamins, B6 does not simply wash out of your system in the urine. So if you have a health problem that's affecting levels of B6 in your body and you take multivitamins and other supplements with a lot of B6 in them it can lead to B6 toxicity and cause a lot of healthy issues - one being peripheral neuropathy. I don't have any medical training or background but know this through research and others who have been affected by high levels of B6 in their system.

Hello John. Thanks for this info. Before I ask my doc to run some labs, what other than B6 should I have checked? Only things that are related to neuropathy please. I've had a lot of things checked due to a lot of weight loss and for other reasons. Thanks so much and warm regards, Sunnyflower

Hi @sunnyflower, I have no medical training or background and would leave that to your neurologist. Here's some information I found that identifies some of the vitamin deficiencies that can cause peripheral neuropathy.

Peripheral Neuropathy Due to Vitamin Deficiency, Toxins, and Medications: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4208100/

Hope this helps!
