Vitamin D has helped my anxiety attacks

Posted by neilc @neilc, Nov 23, 2017

Hello,
I am new to the group. I am on 30mg Cipralex, 4mg Respirodone and 45mg Mirtazipine. My diagnosis is major depression with psychosis. I also suffer with bad anxiety. My psychiatrist has been testing my vitamin D and it was very low and over a 8 month period it has increased to 80. I find the vitamin D has helped the anxiety attacks. They were awful...the feelings of dread were terrible. I am currently taking 3800 IU of vitamin D.

Hello @neilc

I see that this is your first post at Mayo Connect and I would like to welcome you! I appreciate your post about the benefits of Vitamin D for anxiety. Vitamin D seems to be helpful for a lot of disorders. I found some articles on Mayo's website about Vitamin D, https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/expert-answers/vitamin-d-deficiency/faq-20058397 and http://www.mayoclinicproceedings.org/article/S0025-6196%2811%2960190-0/abstract and https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/mayo-clinic-researchers-link-vitamin-d-and-chronic-pain-relief/

If you are comfortable sharing more about yourself, what was your Vitamin D level when it was first noticed as being low? In addition to the Vitamin D supplements, have you increased Vitamin D through your diet as well?

We look forward to getting to know you as you post again.

Thank you Teresa.
I also do guided meditations I find they help with the anxiety and clearing the mind. I even do one at work which is twelve minutes and I do it on my break or lunch break.
I am 56 years old and had my first major breakdown when I was 22. I have had four hospitalizations of approximately 4 weeks each. My last one was in July 2016 where I was on an antibiotic for my diverticulitis and the antibiotics interacted with my cipralex and mirtazipine and I became very depressed and anxious and had severe suicidal ideations. I was hospitalized 12 days.

@neilc

Thank you for sharing your history with anxiety and depression. It looks as if you have done a lot of work towards bettering your outlook and life. The guided meditations sound like they are very helpful to you.

If you are comfortable doing so, please let us know a little more about the guided meditation, do you follow a particular type of meditation practice?

Thank you Teresa. My main guided meditations are from a wellness coach I saw by the name of Moria Hutchison, she is really nice.
Below are two guided meditations from her.
...the connect board does not allow me to post the urls.
The first one is 13 minutes long on the second is 24 minutes long.
I am uncertain what “practice “ you would call these but I find them calming and relaxing.
If I am anxious or depressed I find they help.
I also listen to some meditations on YouTube.

I went to the Royal Ottawa psych hospital to their sleep clinic. The doctor today said there is a close relationship between sleep apnea and anxiety. They are going to do a sleep test on me on April 12. I will find out if I need a Cpap machine.

Hello, @neilc - You'd mentioned a few months back you were going to have a sleep test. Wondering how that test went and whether you learned if you have sleep apnea?
