Meetings after sobriety

Posted by jstrc @jstrc, Aug 20 5:31pm

I'm 19 months sober from alcohol and would like to find a support group meeting. I did 30 days inpatient and several months of outpatient treatment at a treatment center and have attended AA meetings frequently in the past so I'm very familiar with meetings' role in sobriety. What I'm looking for now is a group that's more science based and focused more on daily life, living sober... Honestly, AA was always kind of a struggle for me and, after a year of sobriety I just decided I didn't want to do that anymore but still would like a meeting. I'm in a smaller community in the Midwest so there really isn't anything in the region other than AA.
Any suggestions? I'm also very willing to start my own meeting but not sure how to do that so, if anyone had thoughts on that, it would be more than appreciated.

Hi! Congratulations on 19 months!

I’m sober 20 years in AA, and understand your reluctance to continue attending meetings. I left AA repeatedly over a six year period. Finally, when I got a sponsor (that I listened to) and did the step work, I found a design for living. Alcoholism is a a chronic, progressive brain disease, so bear in mind that you are not currently treating it. I cannot give you a solution to your problem, but I hope you find your way.

I am new to sobriety and am also looking for a science based support group. I have tried AA in the past and also found the twelve step and religion based approach was not for me. Thank you for the above listed resources. I will definitely look into them.

@kshaw82 don’t overthink it! The support will come from your peers, regular people who’ve found ways to stay substance free. Find your people!

Great job getting and staying sober!
I’m not sure a science-based approach is the way to go and in my case science indicates an unbeatable genetic link to alcoholism.
How about joining or starting a group based on recreational interests such as hiking, crafts, cooking, languages, etc..? An activity where alcohol is discouraged or preferably forbidden.
Or a volunteer activity if you have time for that.
Zoom meetings are helping me stay sober. Some are not faith, 12-step or big book based.
Anyway I hope you can find support and friendship with other sober people. We are out there!
