Neuropathic itch anyone?

Posted by sporty333 @sporty333, Jan 10 10:58am

Hi, I have this long standing itch that I’ve had for 28 years now. It’s all over and much worse in the very cold weather. I saw a dermatologist but she forwarded me on to a neurologist.

The only thing to date that helps me with the symptoms is a hot steamroom. It seems to settle down the itching for a while, till the next day when I need another one.

The only thing the neurologist could offer me is the drug gaba whatever it’s called.

Just wondering is anyone else out there has experienced symptoms like this. Has anything helped Ect?

I really don’t want to go down the drug route…

The people here with this itch all comment about having some sort of neuropathy, some idiopathic and some with a definite diagnosis, all different for the most part yet with the common underlying thread of a nerve disfunction. In my case topical Prednisone and Benadryl were some what helpful because inflammation and histamine production were part of the body's natural immune response to this itch but not the actual cause. With that said, until that actual cause is determined an actual remedy has scant chance of emerging. There is some hope though, that if a specific nerve difficulty is successfully treated the itch may be also be resolved as a secondary result of that treatment. Until then, my best strategy is to not scratch at all until that itch finally dissipates, and or to address the symptoms with the topical creams. Open to all input and advice as I would really like this aggravation to go away! Thanks

I have an itch from the right side of my scalp to the bottom of my right eyelid.
I had they believe shingles of the cornea two years ago. I was given hydrocortizone in different strengths It basically bothers me at night and early morning. I am on a steroid for my scalp for two weeks. It helped a little. I am hoping it will go away with time. Nothing seems to help. Any suggestions

From me? Mate I’ve had mine for 29 years and I can’t find out why or how to cure it! I’m of no hope! The only thing that helps me for a while is a hot steamroom…

As someone who suffers with nerve damage to my spine with OA and OP I feel your itch. Here’s some info to help you understand. Also, I’ve read and heard that shingles can cause this without a rash. Have you had a shingles vaccine? I know you said you’ve had this for 28 years.

@jenatsky I was dealing with what I thought was neuropathic itch for a few years, but then I read that hydrochlorathiazide, HCTZ, which I had been on as it’s a diuretic can cause this incessant itch. I stopped the HCTZ and the next day the itch was gone! Look up the info on your meds, especially if you’re on this one, and see if you are 1 of the few that it affects. Good Luck.

I don’t take HCTZ and my itch is related to nerve endings numbness which is followed by the itch. Thankfully it’s not all the time.
