Relapsing after eight years. Back on Pred. Last bout lasted 13 months. Hoping to contain the beast one more time.

@johnbishop does this happen for most of us suffering from PMR, a remission? Does it just naturally happen?

@ga29 Mine started December 2025, diagnosed early January. Refused prednisone (side effects) until capitulating March 20. Tapered from 30MG 1st week to 2.5MG early June, then August skipped an additional day each week until last dose Sep 9. Pain level 1-3, quite doable. Not certain yet if this is called remission but better than pain Jan/Feb level 7-9 Grateful I was on prednisone less than 6 month and hoping this never ever comes back. What a bear this PMR all are dealing with. Stay positive.....

I've had some of those same thoughts since I have other conditions that give me grief from time to time. I also have degenerative disc disease and arthritis along with carpal tunnel in both hands. I had my right knee replaced due to bone on bone pain. My left knee is also bone on bone but I don't have any pain so am choosing to leave it be for now. I think all we can do is take things day by day and do the best we can along with eating healthy and staying active. I do try to limit inflammatory foods and sugar but I do have my days.
Hoping all of those in remission from this disease can stay that way.

I started with carpal tunnel symptoms then progressed to PMR in the fall of 2025. Started on prednisone in December, 2025. Dx with carpal tunnel in March 2026. Prednisone took away the pain of the carpal tunnel but not the numbness in the finger tips. Currently at a taper of 2.5 mg, wearing splints on my hands at night since March. Finger tips have improved, still wrist pain and hand weakness. Dr. is referring me to surgery. How did you deal with your carpal tunnel?
I have some spine issues , psoriasis, epilepsy, age 78.

@eltje I've had a couple of cortisone injections near the base of the thumb but it's not really bad enough for surgery yet. I do use my share of Voltaren gel and Aspercreme lotion on my wrist which helps a little.

Yes this is on my second go around after 10 years. Well, after you get over the disappointment you get your meds and start down the road to tapering off. It sucks but it’s better than other conditions we could be dealing with. Hang in. We will get through it. 👍 someone just asked if I was done yet. No. Down to 2 mg of prednisone and weekly methotrexate. But we are getting there!

@eltje
I started carpel tunnel syndrome years before I had surgery ..... Think of a chickens foot remember when we were younger and you would pull the sinew and the foot would move up and down .Well that's what they do for carpel tunnel syndrome. Awake they cut it ,strap you up for a week or two ,no hassle at all. BUT they obviously forgot to tell us years down the line we may develop PMR on the same side as the Carpel tunnel. oh yes your finger next to your little finger will not be able to bend properly again no hassle there either.

@voll

Interesting to know . so it seems you may get 10 years of respite form PMR.
I've tapered down to 2mg of prednisolone, but the doctors are not doing anything as such. I am waiting for full bloods as I have hypo which jumped to hyperthyroidism. The prednisolone is messing up my thyroid. I can not get off the steroids.:(( no one has offered me methotrexate. That's the adrenal system messed up.
when you think about it the body is a marvellous thing.... yet very complicated .

I’m searching for info on surgery for carpel tunnel. Long story, but I don’t know what else to do.

Ouch. Sorry to hear it. Is Kevzara an option for you? It sure beats prednisone.

@walterl By chance are you also on sny heart medication like Diovan (valsartan)?

@aisp3b I take this medication for BP. Interested to know if there is an issue with PMR that you have heard about, as it doesn't seem that my PMR is getting much better.

Has anyone had bruising and skin tears while tapering down? I’m down to 2 mg a day and notice bruising that is worse than ever ( and I’m on Eliquis so I’m very familiar with with bruising).
