Anyone else dealing with shingles?

Posted by oldkarl @oldkarl, Apr 20, 2020

I now have shingles. My inoculation this year did not work. In fact, I am worried that I was given something else, as my shingles started up about two months after the shot.

@marcia115 I agree with the salt rinse. The oncologists I worked with had us using equal parts salt and baking soda. Worked great. May I ask about the tooth extraction? The dentist said that your immune system may have been affected by the shingles. You want to be positive that all infection has left your body because a tooth extraction leaves an open wound.
Can you ask the dentist if he would give you a prescription for an antibiotic?

becsbuddy,
I will have a temporary inlay put in, for 4 months until it heals, I have one now because
I lost a tooth to bacon and I tried to get the bacon out, and it was a root canal tooth so thank
goodness it didn't hurt, I think this is the tooth next to it. He gave me a Zpack, but I can't use it
just yet because I have to have a colonoscopy on Monday, after that I will take it till Friday
when I have the tooth pulled. Turn 82 and all kind of sh.. happens

My neighbor who was 69 just passed away from not getting the shingles vaccine. He got an infection that gave him swelling of the brain. His sister was after him to get the vaccine but he didn’t get around to it.

My doc said just to keep oiling the lesions, and hey would go away. They are going away slowly.

@oldkarl hi - I'm new here - what kind of oil did your doctor recommend? Did it work?

@dablues I was ordered to get 2 vaccines for pneumonia which were so bad my entire left arm turned red and stiffened so badly I went to the ER so I passed on the shingles vaccine and have ended up with shingles. And I got pneumonia a few years later - doctor told me 'they can't give you a vaccine for everything.'

@marcia115 Your post is very interesting to me. Earlier this year I cracked a molar and after much treatments it got abscessed and was removed . . . that was bad enough but about 6 weeks later I developed shingles. This has not been a good year.

I used Terrasil (over the counter cream) on my shingles sores and it dried them out and reduced the itch/pain very effectively. My doctor also prescribed Valacyclovir and Gabapentin. All in all, I felt like I got off easy. The pain was not too intense and did not last too long. I was able to work the whole time. I think the Terrasil made a real difference.

I got my Shingles vaccines in Aug & Nov ‘25, and had zero issues with them. Fast forward to date and I was put onto 60mg Pred for GCA. I had a shingles outbreak on my butt! I didn’t feel it at all, and it healed over. Three days ago I was dropped to 50 mg pred and today it reactivated not just my backside, but the top of my front left thigh. I’ve been being treated for thrush in my mouth also, but Nystatin isn’t doing the job so now I’m concerned it’s in my mouth and my terrible sore throat is involved. Of course it’s Sunday… I also developed a shadow in my lower right lung that could be nothing at all, or a low-grade fungal infection caused by the prednisone. Today I started a special antibiotic to protect against that infection, a non-sulfonamide since I have anaphylaxis reaction to Sulfa antibiotic. Prednisone is ACTIVELY killing me right now but GCA means I have no choice until insurance approves Actemra. I’m completely miserable. Pred suppressed my immunity so deeply that it made my full vaccinations useless.
