What is the difference between Octreotide and Lanreotide?

Posted by carrie567 @carrie567, May 26 2:38pm

My 70 yr old husband had small bowel tumor Grade 1 resected due to bowel obstruction. Dotatate Petscan revealed other areas in pelvic region and possibly liver so it is stage 4. Net doctor at UCSF most likely wants to start on SSA shots. For sheer convenience and less discomfort, it seems that lanreotide better option but wonder what others think or if this is not up to us to decide and is doctor preference.

Hi, I have been on Octreotide for 4 years but my oncologist might prescribe me Lanreotide. I had my fourth operation on 11/10/2025 where the doctors had to remove my terminal ileum because of the obstruction caused by adhesions, which has led to an increase in my diarrhea.
Do you think changing the injection would help with my diarrhea?
I would really appreciate it if you could share your experiences.

Good day to you. I had my ascending colon, and ileum valve removed 21 years ago. I had unexpected diarrhea for a few years. Eventually my body adapted, meaning I could usually find a bathroom. I think my body adjusted. Bowel movements for me then usually came about 10-20 minutes after a meal. I'd try adjusting how much and what you eat to see if that changes your situation. Good Luck it's not easy but i hope you find a quality of life that is acceptable to you. Good Luck. Your body is amazing so help it recover. I also stopped alcohol which seemed to help.

This is a good question and one worth asking and finding the right decision for each person.
Here is a link to the discussion which addresses your question:
https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/octreotide-or-lanreotide/
Your NET specialist is probably aware of the NIH (National Institute of Health) study which compares and contrasts Octreatide and Lanreotide. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12120025/

After discussing with my NET oncologist I chose the Lanreotide shot. It came down to the NET specialist opinion and my willingness to find out which works better with less side effects for me.
I know that adding Creon to whichever shot, helped with the diarrhea for me, so a discussion with the NET specialist was the best idea. My local Doctor had only given out Ochtreatide but gave me Lanreotide after discussion which has worked out.. I was told that if it did not work, we could try the other..
Wishing you peace of mind and a doable shot with whatever you come to take.

@maeve115 thank you for the kind response! I read the links you sent, and I understand it much better now. The thing is I live in Turkey and there is no NET
specialist. My oncologist knows a lot about NET but not sure changing shots, would make any difference with my symptoms…

Hi Yasemin. Since your diarrhea became significantly worse after your terminal ileum was removed, I would ask your doctor specifically about bile-acid malabsorption before assuming that changing from octreotide to lanreotide will solve the problem.

Hi @mcharlesfranci , my gastroenterologist already prescribed me colestryramin for bile acid malabsorption and I’ve been using it for 3 weeks. It’s already helping with diarrhoea but some days are still very bad.
Since it isn’t commonly used here, I’m trying to learn about it on my own. From what I’ve read online, the timing and the way you take it seem to be important. I’d really appreciate it if you could share your experience with me.
Thank you!

@doonman Thank you so much for sharing your experience with me. It’s really encouraging to hear that your body eventually adapted after your ascending colon and ileocecal valve were removed. I’m still trying to figure out what works best for me, especially because my diarrhea has been ongoing and I’m also missing part of my small intestine.

I’ll definitely pay more attention to what and how much I eat, and I’ll keep trying to understand what my body needs. It’s reassuring to hear that things can improve with time. Thank you again for your kind words and encouragement. I really appreciate it.
