Reflux: Is anyone else on Sucralfate?

Posted by wklapp @wklapp, Aug 26 9:36pm

Is anyone else on Sucralfate? It’s to help with ulcers etc in the lining. I’m drinking 1g 3-4x a day along with 2 Omeprazole a day and still having awful reflux. I’m post surgery 9 months. I have another endoscopy with cryogenics tomorrow.

I couldn't take sucralfate, I take one 20 mg of omep. in the morning and one 40 mg of omep in the evening and one pepsid at 11am and 2 pepsid at 8pm. finally little or no episodes of the horrible reflux. I don't eat 4 hours before I go to bed and only drink about 10 ounces of filtered water between 6:30 and 7:45 pm and go to bed at 9. I sleep only on my back and on a mattress that is on my mattress and 7 inches higher at the head with 2 or more pillows on top of that and a pillow under my knees so I won't get back pain. I drink no coffee, eat no chocolate or citrus and don't take supplements except b12, e, d3 and one iron pill every other day as I was getting low in ferritin and we are hoping this will work. Good luck!!!!!!

I found it helpful during the latter phases of treatment and immediately afterwards. I also used, and still do, Cepacol sore throat lozenges, about 10K so far. Some throat irritation will always be with me, as in the last 15 months, since I substituted scar tissue for epithelium...

BTW, get that head up at night. A lot of the reflux problem will go away...

Yes, I take 3 a day plus the max dose of Omeprazole.
The burning reflux is under control most of the time although I still get fairly regular episodes during the night even tho I sleep elevated, don't eat after 7pm, avoid sweets etc

16 yrs post surgery. My advice is to listen to your body more than your Dr when it comes to post esophagectomy quality of life. I wont get into my history but I will tell you to experiment with EVERYTHING. I have found that eating a large meal right before going to bed acts like a plug while sleeping and helps control the reflux. I would also recommend joining our twice weekly zoom calls for additional advice from fellow survivors.

@naoshapiro1 That's interesting. I had my first ever ferritin infusion on Friday (9/25). I think I can already tell a difference in endurance. I have a history of IBS and my oncologist didn't think I could tolerate the oral iron. I've also been low in ferritin and H & H for years, before cancer diagnosis...

@earle I went for a consultation for ferritin infusion but they wouldn't give it to me. Apparently, my level didn't go low enough and there was too many dangers so my nutritionist got an iron pill that would not upset my IBS and I take it after my second breakfast Apparently, my level didn't go low enough for them to give me an infusion of iron and there were too many dangers so my nutritionist got a iron pill that would not upset my IBS and I take it after my second breakfast with Kiwi because it will absorb better if you take it with vitamin C and there's a lot of vitamin C in kiwi, but I haven't had a redo of my ferritin level so I don't know if it's working my endocrinologist takes my blood levels that every three or four months so I'll know in three or four months if I needed the infusion when you mentioned Hand H scores being low I don't know what you meant. Thank you for answering. They were worried that if I got an infusion, I might have a bad reaction.

From reading, I really haven't seen so far that the infusion is a particularly dangerous procedure. The main one, which is rare, is anaphylaxis. That's one in 250,000. Other than that, joint aches and flu-like symptoms are around five in 100. I did have some joint pain, but I attributed that to overdoing because the iron did seem to give me an energy boost. I did have a light headache upon waking up for the next two days. They kept me around for 30 minutes for observation is all. I'm frankly a little puzzled at any talk about dangers, unless you have comorbidities which would affect the procedure. I tried the iron pills and couldn't tolerate them...
