Weight Loss

Posted by lorrie48 @lorrie48, Jan 24, 2025

I have gone from 117 lbs to 108 lbs. since I was first diagnosed with Bronchiectasis and MAC a year ago. I've been taking the Big 3 for seven months. Early on, I had loss of appetite but not now. In fact, I eat well. I was just wondering if weight loss with MAC and bronchiectasis is a thing and what would cause it.

@ja24 My understanding is that 18.2 is an O.K. BMI. What have you been told?
My BMI is 17.6 and I am working on, trying to get it up. Hard to put the weight on with eating healthy. I do notice that what also raises the number on the scale is....lots of water. Stands to reason.
When i had been down ten pounds from where I am now, I was at nearly 90lbs and I am now at 101.77, I was so light that I was constantly tripping over myself as if I was about to fall. That ended with just that small gain in weight.

My BMI is 17.8 and I was told that this was not good. My average BMI for most of my life was 21 very healthy but once I went on the big 3 back in 2022 the weight fell off me. It is tough going as you do not have the same stamina. I got my BMI up to 18.5 but I started to get nausea from from the PPI I take for my GERD and found it difficult to eat. I am tapering this at the moment. Something else to deal with! Still on watchful waiting for my NTM. Keep working on eating a healthy diet, it is all we can do. These over processed calorific drinks like Ensure are not the best.

@blm1007blm1007 - According to my electronic scale, once you go below 18.5 BMI you are in the below normal range. That number has also been mentioned by the experts in Bronchiectasis and NTM. Good luck in keeping the weight on.

@ja24 @namd Although having gained 11 lbs. in three years and holding. Yes, I so would like to raise my BMI to what would be a healtier number.
So far I am very, very fortunate in that I feel fine, energy level O.K. MAI staying low on watchful waiting for three years and my appetite is good.. Biggest problems: Night wake up and spending 5 to 10 minutes clearing mucus and the amount needing to clear during the day and having mucus plugs.
I refuse to do Ensure and will make my own healthy smoothies with protein veggie powders.
Why they add all they add to the products is for their benefit, most of the time, not for our benefit. I am glad to see WalMart trying to take out much of the additives in their BetterGoods products.. However, their Better Goods Lemon Infused Fettuccine Pasta was just recalled. Why don't they just keep it simple and pure.!!! Seems every other week there is a recall.

@blm1007blm1007 I agree with you about Ensure. More than once I've stood and looked the many competing brands of nutrition shakes on the shelf at the supermarket. I'm very sensitive to food additives and emulsifiers, stabilizers like guar gum, carrageenan, cellulose gum etc. They give me extra mucus, and like you I deal with mucus all day long as it is. Some brands have more of this stuff than others. The Boost brand has stabilizers and emulsifiers listed right after the protein, so it's not an insignificant amount. Sugar and glucose syrup are the 2nd ingredient after water, which I'm sure are for calories and masking the horrible taste. It uses canola oil instead of a healthier oil, and there isn't much more protein than a simple glass of milk, but people pay big bucks for it. These shakes make me so full that I can't drink my water requirement for the day. I'd rather make my own shake if I could find a really good, safe protein powder.

@ursala7 I look for protein powders that are only made from one type of nut or seed, like almond or walnuts, sunflower or pumpkin seeds. Then I add whatever I want in the way of fruits and vegetables to make a smoothie.
Amazon has many choices.

Hi, I ordered a plant based protein from Truvani. It is very 'clean' and only has 5 ingredients. I add it to my smoothies. I got the vanilla flavour. I live in the UK and ordered it from the US. It was a gamble but it gave me no side effects it can be a bit chalky but sipped slowly it is fine.

I did not set up a subscription as I wanted to see if was suitable. But I will now. Good luck.

@bernadene24 I just started ANTI LABS Protein powder. States independently tested and stringent limits on heavey metals and microbial pathogens. I did an AI search and can only hope its a healthier choice for me.
