@marie69, I want to encourage you to read the information that @johnbishop has shared with you about autoimmune hepatitis. You will read that the goal fo treatment is to slow or stop the progression of the disease. Organ transplant is condisered only when all other interventions have failed.
-Here is information about Crohn's Disease. https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/crohns-disease/symptoms-causes/syc-20353304
- Both of these diseases are autoimmune in nature, and it is not unusual for them to appear together.
Marie, I was once suspected to have AIH, and have had my share of liver biopsies. I did need a transplant for another liver disease. It is important that your daughter is getting care from a qualified specialist. My PCP sent me to a GI (gastroenterologist) who was very knowledgeable about liver issues.
How old is your daughter? Do you have a GI (gastroenterologist)?
Hello @luserm1 - Welcome to Mayo Connect. We are glad you found us. Connect is a good place to share your health concerns, ask questions and learn what others are doing for similar health concerns. I have no medical training or background but I do have an autoimmune disease - polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR). I take turmeric supplements to help with the inflammation and think it helps some. When I'm trying to find as much out as I can about a supplement, drug or treatment I will use Google Scholar (https://scholar.google.com/) which is great for finding research information. I did a search on your question - Is it beneficial to use turmeric for cirrhosis caused by autoimmune hepatitis? and it returned quite a few links that may be of interest to you. https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&q=Is+it+beneficial+to+use+turmeric+for+cirrhosis+caused+by+autoimmune+hepatitis&btnG=&as_sdt=1%2C24&as_sdtp=
Can you share a little information about yourself and what you are doing for treatment now? It might be helpful for other Connect members with similar health concerns.
This is Sanai and I am in 3rd stage of auto immune liver disease, my Numbers are in 8.0 and Ive been on Ursodiol 500mg three time a day for 25 years now , I just went through a lot of testing the last two months and second option from Liver specialist Barnes Univ. Hospital as well as In Belvidere IL , the results are as follow : my numbers have gone down by 2 , for which ever reason ., everything is stable right now but still in third stage. My medication have not changed , and not ready for a transplant do for. I read I can not take turmeric due to my medication interference, but I Aldo suffer with the fibromyalgia, it’s better when I follow my diet with veg/fruit , very low sugar intake, low salt, and keeping my stress down.
As a suggestion, read your meds and any herbs combo before you start taking anything, you don’t want any Interference.
Please give me any feed back on your liver condition , where as I’m open for good suggestions.
Thanks
@marie69, I am going to quess that this is her 1st liver biopsy. I have read about a range of different experiences that patients have had with the procedure. I have had experience at several different clinics. Each hospital or clinic was handled in a slightly different manner, but they all involved a numbing shot, and a punch needle to obtain 3 samples. My experience was more worrisome to me the procedure. It is quick, so any discomfort quickly gone. The assistant talked to me the whole time to distract me. Afterward, I had to lie flat while my vital signs were monitored to be sure there was no bleeding. I think that was the hardest part for me - lying there and waiting to be discharged. I remember that I took some tylenol for minor discomfort afterward.
Keep in touch.

@jtg8771, I am well acquainted with the regular routine labs. I began to feel like a pin cushion along my liver journey..
It sounds promising that your daughter might be on a medicine that is helping her.
I was once thought to have AIH (autoimmune hepatitis) by my GI. But he was not certain that was my problem and he sent me to a liver specialist for a 2nd opinion. I share this because I want you to know that if she is not having satisfactory results, that might be something to consider.
Does your daughter have any symptoms like fatigue or nausea?
She does have fatigue and has even had to not go to classes in college to sleep some. Nausea yes but more than that the just not wanting to eat and stomach hurting. But I have noticed since she switched to tacrolimus for treatment liver enzymes are finally normal and she is 2.5 mg from coming completely off Prednisone. We chose to seek a second opinion on treatment and are now with a very knowledgeable Dr. Out of Houston. The thing that upsets me most is we waited so long to go to someone else. With the enzymes normal she has not had as many boughts with nausea or stomach issues but we will see how things go with her back in school and more stressed with classes. Thankfully this is her last year and I'm hoping if enzymes stay normal she won't have those really bad days she can't even go to class.
My best advice to you is find that Dr who has lots of experience with autoimmune hepatitis cause when we finally asked our GI he stated we have seen our fair share. Wouldn't even answer out right and didn't know of the more updated treatments that are now being used if the first two meds don't work. So ask, ask and ask again how much experience your Dr has with this disease.

I'm not sure. I'm going to see him this Thursday. He said I just have to take some meds and it should go away. I could even post his response. I have done some research and found this is a very serious disease.

Yeah that is what our first Dr said. Oh you'll be on meds a few years then you'll be fine. Then she had an intolerance to Imuran which is the first line of meds then switched to cell cept which is the second line of meds and tolerated them but after several months liver enzymes were not getting better and his response then changed to well if it doesn't get better she will have to have a liver transplant. That's when we started looking for a new Dr. We had also gone to a conference about AIH and learned there were other meds and when our Dr was presented with them he bucked it and just said those are post transplant meds and don't get used pre transplant. He reluctantly started her on tacrolimus after doing some research and finding out oh yes they are using it. New Dr informed us of stuff we didn't even get told about some of her test done a year prior like how much damage was already done to her liver and was so much more knowledgeable about everything. Oh yeah and within a week of being on Tacrolimus her liver enzymes were normal and so far have stayed normal for 2 months. She is almost completely off Prednisone.
She is 37 and yes, she has a gastroenterologist. The liver biopsy should be in about 2 weeks. She just received the Crohn's diagnosis last week.

Did your doctor offer any suggestions or treatments to help with your symptoms?
I just found out I have this. Can anyone give me some helpful insight on how they are coping with this disease
