proximal hamstring avulsion Surgery

Posted by upgirl2013 @upgirl2013, Jul 14, 2025

Hi,
I fell on July 3 and tore my hamstrings off my sits bones.
Last Friday I had surgery to have three anchor screws to attached the hamstring to my butt.
My pain on day 3 is only at the incision site and not too bad.
I have found little information regarding personal recoveries.
I currently have knee brace set for 90degree with strict instructions to not put my foot down. I am using crutches as our house is too small for the turning radius of the scooter that I rented.
How do you maneuver stairs? It seems like I have to bend my leg past the brace allowance to go from our living room to our entry way.
I figured out how to take a shower by getting on the shower seat first, taking the brace off and drying diligently before putting brace back on while sitting on the shower chair. We use suctioned cup hand rails on our plastic shower stall.
Any tips, testimonials and questions are welcome.
Katy

Hi Katy, I am having proximal hamstring surgery on Tuesday, August 4. It helps to hear of other people that have gone through the procedure. At this point did not have any experience taking stairs.

Today, at 226 days post operation, I used the dustpan without crying! Funny on the little things seem soooo hard.
I hope you all finding joy and humor in the little hurdles you have to overcome.

@upgirl2013 I am having the surgery on August 4. I’m on the fence of whether or not I want to go through with it. I have a 90% tear however my hamstring has minimal retraction. Reading all these stories about rehab is scaring me.

Each case is completely different, so I can only address my particular case. I am very happy with my surgery results.
I had a “complete proximal hamstring from the ischial tuberosity, so I didn’t really feel I had much of a choice. Mine was “retracted distantly approximately 7cm and redundant.
I feel I had a good surgeon and also a good Physical therapist. Recovery wasn’t easy, but in my case I am extremely pleased with my results.
My surgery was about 10 1/2 months ago.
I was very nervous and frightened making my decision. It is not a common surgery, so I understand your concerns.

@tamb
Thanks for sharing your story. I’m still on the fence whether or not I’m going to have the surgery. I have a 90% tendon detachment but my hamstring is still attached. It’s not retracted. I am 3 1/2 weeks from the injury and I’m walking good I was just in the pool swimming laps, squatting doing heel raises and I feel good. Surgery is scheduled for Tuesday so I need to noodle on this this weekend and make my decision by Monday.

@jenwing503 what did you decide regarding the surgery? I have heard great things about going the nonsurgerical route for non detached hamstrings.
Surgery for mine and @tamb’s repairs were not optional.

Just checking to see if anyone is still using this thread. Im 3 weeks out from surgery for my proximal hamstring repair. Trying to find people to talk to about the recovery phase. Thanks.

I am here! I started this group because I could not find much information on the practical side of recovery. 3 weeks is very early in your recovery. Are you in a knee brace, hip brace or no brace?
