Neuropathy sudden stiffness in my feet & ankles.

Has anyone had a sudden flare up of stiffness in the feet & ankles? Came on suddenly over night. Worst in 15 years. I don’t know why now.

Hello @wbp, Welcome to Connect. I know the feeling. Took a fall and had stitches above my eye due to glasses gouging my forehead due to doing a pirouette in the kitchen with my upper body and the feet didn't get the message to turn with the body. It has forced me to think when moving too quickly. How long have you been dealing with neuropathy? Do you have any pain or take any medications for neuropathy?

@johnbishop Lots of pain but if I hold very still in just the right spot in my recliner, it's so much better. Unfortunately cannot live my life like that. It is so frightening to have feet and legs freeze - can you tell now when it's coming? I've had neuropathy getting worse for years but just worked around it at first. Now it's wheelchair time. I take Aleve and have ordered gummies for pain to see if that helps. I don't want to get high or dizzy just more comfortable. I feel sorry for us - I was hoping for no more surgery in my remaining years.

Welcome @cargar81, I only have numbness and some tingling with my neuropathy but also came here to Connect to learn what has helped others navigate neuropathy symptoms. Do you have pain with your neuropathy? Are you taking any pain medications for it?

Perhaps well known, but neuropathy is more than skin deep, it’s to the bone. And add in muscles compromised by it, and any change in gait and your foot and ankle joints can start to hurt. Even hairline fractures can happen if there’s enough misdirected stress. For me, walking helps reduce the frequency of nerve pain at night, while it likely stresses the foot and ankle. I use braces.Recommend Reparrel’s braces.

@greypole - I forgot to add, minimize walking around in bare or stocking feet. You need some sort of good support, I have pairs of walking shoes I just use inside or on the deck. And yes, I am guilty of not wearing them.

I've had idiopathic neuropathy for several years, mostly numbness. Suddenly also, tightness in feet and ankles and some burning. Don't know why or how to help. Been going to a neurologist, but he just advises gabapentin which I reject since it just covers symptoms, doesn't help to cure. I realize there's no cure. I walk a lot hoping that helps, but not sure if it really does. So frustrating.
