Neuropathy sudden stiffness in my feet & ankles.
Has anyone had a sudden flare up of stiffness in the feet & ankles? Came on suddenly over night. Worst in 15 years. I don’t know why now.

@blowerk1216 thank you very much for sharing this info. Did your numbness and pain go up your legs? I tried the medicine gave me by the neurologist (Lyrica and/or Gabapentin) but the side effects were really bad (sleepiness and lightheaded) and I had to stop them. Thank you and all the best !

Hi. John. Along your journey, did you have an MRI and a lumbar X-ray to see if you had spinal stenosis (esp. L4-5) causing your symptoms?
I understand you were diagnosed with PN, but there could be one or more causes of PN operating at the same time, right?

2 ReactionsHi @deefer, welcome to Connect - I was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease prior to getting my neuropathy diagnosis so I’m sure it probably doesn’t help much. Have you been diagnosed with neuropathy too?

1 Reaction@johnbishop . Hello John. Thank you for letting me know about your degenerative disc disease. I was curious to know about that and whether you received treatment or surgery to correct or mitigate it, and whether it helped with your neuropathy.
Yes. I have had peripheral neuropathy for almost 27 years now and had some early lumbar X-rays and two emg's. I managed the PN over the years. The last two years, the PN has gotten much worse. I just had a lumbar X-ray and an MRI that show a severe L4-L5 nerve root issue affecting my left leg and foot. I have bilateral issues as well. I have another EMG this week to update my situation and look at progression. After that, I will likely see a spinal surgeon and neurologist. Spinal surgery may be considered at some point. That's why I was wondering about you and your disc disease and whether you had surgery and if it helped. Keep up the good work on Connect for all of us.

1 Reaction@corneliagd My neuropathy started July 2024 and it was just in my toes and I thought that was a big deal. BOY i did realize how that was a whole lot of nothing .It is now in my feet and up to my knees. All they can offer is meds. I feel no one is really looking for the answer. Just come back in a year and we will see how it has progressed!!! NOT good enough. I feel NO ONE GIVES A damn. There are two Boston neurologists whose write ups say they work hard to figure out the cause of ideopathic neuropathy but have not been able to get an appointmen in 2 years. I realize things could be worse but to me this is devestating

1 Reaction@deefer - When I was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease they didn't mention anything about surgery may be needed down the road or would even help. I did have a right knee replacement in my mid 70s which was bone on bone but painful due to having a previous knee surgery for a torn meniscus in my 40s. The left knee is bone on bone but no pain so it's so far so good for that one. Most of my pain from the DDD is in the shoulder and hip joints but don't think replacement is in the future and I'm trying to just keep mobile with regular exercise and frequent use of Voltaren and Aspercreme. 🙃
Hello @wbp, Welcome to Connect. I know the feeling. Took a fall and had stitches above my eye due to glasses gouging my forehead due to doing a pirouette in the kitchen with my upper body and the feet didn't get the message to turn with the body. It has forced me to think when moving too quickly. How long have you been dealing with neuropathy? Do you have any pain or take any medications for neuropathy?
@deefer Thank you, John. It's difficult to identify the causes and solution(s), if any, for neuropathy. In the meantime, we deal with progression and pain. I am anxious to find possible answers in the next few weeks. In the meantime, I hope to stay positive like many of you who Connect with us.
My feet are very numb & stiff but come in wicked waves. I try & ride my e-bike or the stationary bike. as often as possible and it does improve circulation and gives me relief- the more I ride the better I feel.
I’m 82.
