Exercise and Bronchiectasis

Posted by conniec @conniec, 5 days ago

My pulmonologist has talked about exercise as almost as important as airway clearance in our disease. I'm 77. I also have hfpef which is a form of heart failure. I walk usually everyday or every other day about 30 to 40 minutes. I sometimes bike ride or workout on water (pedal or paddleboard) instead of walking (or waterwalk if its really hot!!)
I tend to have a more steady experience in walking and my pulse is recorded anywhere between 70 and 90's. My resting pulse is anywhere between 55-58. I do try to push myself sometimes but have to be careful at the beginning of my exercise as I can develop distressing shortness of breath (due to the hfpef). However, once i get going, I"m fine. I guess what I"m looking for is, if I"m not getting my heart rate up to my Target Rate as defined by the formula for that, am I ok with what I am doing? I sometimes for a short period of time get my pulse up higher with my bike riding and pedalboarding.

You can find articles, research and opinions at every end of the spectrum about exercise. Exercise is without a doubt one of the best things anyone can do for their health- physical and mental. I think the keys to it is make sure it is the type of exercise you enjoy and be consistent.

@beulahaz09 I've been doing 20 min qi gong with kseny greg. The ads are getting worse, so I might pay her membership.

I google: Qi Gong acupressure and breathing for lung health Kseny Greg

I watched a bunch and I really like this one. She has quite a few videos.

I asked my NJH ID doctor about that, and she told me that for me to reduce my nebulizing/ACT to 1/day, I should exercise to the point where I'm sweating. Sorry, I don't remember if she said for 30 minutes or how long, but I had been walking the treadmill for 30 minutes and just increased to 45 minutes (faster speed) and I've noticed a big difference. I rarely produced anything while nebulizing and now, I am producing sputum (not a lot) after these recent exercise sessions-where I am now sweating.

@kathyjjb GREAT!!! I take it from what you said you don't get breathless.
That's MARVELOUS.
Good to know...."exercise to the point where you are sweating."
I exercise but not to that point. I will have to figure out how to do that at home without a treadmill.
So glad to hear it is helping...
I take it during the day you are drinking much water or having soups? That has helped me a great deal.

@blm1007blm1007 My asthma/reactive airways did get out of control earlier this summer and it was hard to breathe, but my doctor put me on Advair "for now" and breathing well now. The Brinsupri might be helping as well. So, knock on wood, I'm doing okay. Also, I typically walk outside except for 3 months during the summer, so I bought a Lifepro walking pad-lot cheaper than the standard treadmill. Yes, living in the desert, I'm conditioned to drink a lot of water. Here, the lows are in the upper 80's to the upper 90's (THE LOWS), so this year, I got the walking pad.

@kathyjjb I was not familiar with walking pads. Good to know about. I did look up information about the types available.
Glad you are able to say "I'm doing O.K.".
Hot here also, everything is burnt or burning, OKC. The worst I have ever experienced here.

Thanks Barbara! Yes, so far so good. This summer is the worst for us as well, the AQI has been miserable-which must be terrible now in OKC. I sure hope you get a good rain! Fall will be here soon.

@debw1017 When I was working I always walked the stairs to and from my 4th floor office. At home there are 14 steps between floors and on busy days I go up and down as many as 20 times! I'll have to remember to exercise on them in bad weather.
