Burning mouth syndrome – anyone else have this?

Posted by londonex @londonex, Jan 1, 2025

I was diagnosed with burning mouth syndrome (BMS) in 2019 after going to my GP and gastroenterologist with complaints of heartburn and throat soreness. An endoscopy proved no GERD issues and an oral pathologist ended up diagnosing me with BMS. It has been described to me as a neuropathy of the fifth cranial nerve, and the second cranial nerve which, in my case, affects the back of my throat, top of my mouth and occasionally up through my sinuses to cause a raging headache. It comes on with high stress and anxiety, sometimes with hot or cold or spicy foods, and lasts anywhere from one hour to one week.
Really doesn’t respond to any medication. Stress reduction and yoga do help a bit (placebo?) when I put my mind to it but for the most part, BMS is a bothersome undercurrent in my daily life. Just wondering if others are suffering with this as well.
Thank you!

@raquelkool
I live in Canada and have found a gentle, soothing kind of toothpaste called Biotene.

I also use their other products including Biotene mouthspray during the night and their mild soothing Biotene mouthwash. I have been using these products for years and while not eliminating all the pain, it has helped substantially.
Maybe you can find something similar for youself. The recommendation came from my dentist, not my own Dr.

I also have BMS for about 4 years now. I have little to no relief . I do take Gabapentin daily and will occasionally take the edge off

@kathyacurl my burning mouth was caused by pregabalin and hydrocone act. When I stopped those medications the burning mouth and tongue pain went away. I continued to take baclofen without problems.

The burning mouth could ask be caused by another medication. There is also acid reflux to consider. I did have a scope that revealed I had Barrett’s.My acid reflux was silent. treating the Barrett’s and taking sucralfate liquid also helped in settling my burning mouth ad tongue down. For the Barrett’s I now sleep with my upper body elevated to prevent acid reflux. I also follow all recommendations to prevent acid reflux. Treating acid reflux helped tone down the burning tongue and mouth. Stopping the hydrocone-act and pregabalin stopped the remainig burning mouth

@mouthburning Dayna I recently had shingles in Dec 2025. Then in Jan 2026 I came down with postcshingle nerve deep within my right ear and on right side of chin and face. I was given pregabalin for the pain and hydrocone-act. We figured out that hydrocone-act was making the pain worse so I stopped the pain pills. I have had 5 nerve blocks for the pain. I did not want to take pregabalin but that’s what I was offered. The 5th nerve block did not dull the pain. I also picked up burningmouth again from what they first flushed the IV with. 4 weeks later I was still dealing with the burning mouth again plus the post shingle nerve pain. I decided to start down dosing pregabalin to get off it. I was takig 100 mg3 times a day. Now I am on one 50 mg twice daily of pregabalin and I have noticed the burningtongue and mouth getting so much better on this dosage. It’s such a relief. I will continue down dosing until I am off pregabalin. I hope to never take pregabalin again ever!

I’ve had BMS for 12 years. Tried clonazepam oral rinse and it gave me some relief but made me very depressed after 3 days of use. I am now trying Low Dose Naltrexone. I started at 1.5 mgs for two months (titration faze) now on 2.0 mgs. My research indicates a 50-60% reduction in BMS symptoms at 4.5 mgs. It is a process, it hasn’t helped the BMS yet, but it has significantly reduced my brain fog, and calmed down symptoms of nerve damage and osteoarthritis. Hoping that the higher dose will give me significant relief. My doctor sent a prescription to a Compounding Pharmacy in York Main. They are great.
