GLP-1 agonists (Ozempic, etc.) to treat long-COVID?

Posted by roxannelee @roxannelee, Nov 15, 2025

Anyone know if health insurances will cover GLP-1 agonists to alleviate long-COVID? If not, anyone know the cost out of pocket for those meds?

I've had Long Covid symptons since having Covid in 2020. I did not get any of the shots.
They started about 6 months after my first illnes and I lost my sense of taste and smell. It wasn't so bad and I fine about a week or so later.
Then a few months later it happened again. This time it was worse and lasted longer. I started to get headaches every day also.
A couple months later the same thing happened, each time getting worse so now the smells are making me nauseous. I can't even describe what they smell like because I've never smelled anything like them before. At first it was like burning rubber or rotting fruit, now I can't even describe it.
I started on Zepbound in July for weight control without any thought that this drug might possibly help with Long Covid. In my case , none of my symptoms have improved or gone away so I am still looking for that magic potion to help me live a normal life again

@cathytruden Wegovy has helped me, but also daily claritin and pepsid. I developed crazy reactions to foods I'd been eating my entire life.. yeast, avocados, rice (and most carbs) strawberries, chick peas, walnuts, oats.. it's a long long list. Apparently these foods are also high in histamine. I have completely eliminated many of them, but I'm hoping that cromolyn will help. Started taking it a few weeks ago but I had a lot of nausea from it. That's the last thing I need; more nausea. Anyway I had to stop it for an endo/colonoscopy last week. The dr found stomach ulcers and took biopsies. Until the results are back, no more cromolyn. It's also cumbersome to take. Has to be taken 30 minutes prior to eating, and at bedtime, for 4 doses daily. Just thinking about now having to watch the time around eating makes me anxious.. like yourself, it's been a lot. Adding on to that pile of concerns isn't something I'm looking forward to. Don't ever give up. I've taken "breaks" from trying to figure this out, which I find help me think a little differently and that certainly helps, gives me time to have new ideas and notice details I may not have noticed while always up to my eyes in these symptoms and trying to decipher what is going on at any given moment. Keeping a good thought for you that you see some improvement soon!

@jgk177 Interesting that your teeth hurt from the Wegovy injection! I have just joined Dr. Daniel Pompa’s Program and will be following his protocol. I don’t want to just take a drug that’s going to eliminate fat from my body, that’s just me. I am learning what foods to eat to alleviate body inflammation and how to do it in a healthy way. I know that the Wegovy works as my husband is on it, but he still eats poorly but continues to loose weight. I’d rather find out the foods that bother me and eliminate them instead of taking the drug. It’s a lifestyle change that we need.

How much of a dose did you take for currently taking for wegovy? I did not have a good experience with one dose of Zepbound but that's just me. Did you have weight to lose? Are you taking a microdose? Thanks for your response.

I was on a GLP1 drug for two months (don't ask me which one), at $200 a month. Didn't do a thing for my long Covid (which is mostly about fatigue), but I did lose about 10 pounds.

@kstrand1 wishing you good luck!! My gastro doctor told me I can take more Claritin if I feel I need to. I take one a day first thing in the morning - but there have been days I've taken another a little later after lunch before dinner. The GLP-1 has an anti-inflammatory effect which is why I believe it works so well. There are studies on this.. https://www.autoimmuneinstitute.org/covid_timeline/glp-1-drugs-enter-formal-testing-for-long-covid-treatment/
I really hope you find some relief.

I am enrolled in this study. Due to some substantial side effects (luckily no tooth pain) as well as weight loss, I am quite certain that I was assigned the GLP-1.
I am optimistic as I am frequently experiencing decreased brain fog and increased energy.

@ellen27 That's great news! I too feel decreased brain fog, increased energy and fewer GI issues along with less tooth pain and all the other random symptoms that seem to pile up.

@jgk177 That's wonderful! I unfortunately have significant GI issues on the study drug.

@roadog66 I’m not on a GLP-1. I’ve lost my weight naturally by eliminating gluten, dairy, soy, seed oils and sugar. Never took a GLP-1 and wouldn’t at this time. My husband is a heart patient and is on Wegovy as it’s one of 2 that is good for heart patients.
