New to CKD: Looking for advice

Posted by bward200158 @bward200158, Aug 31 2:14pm

I am new to all of this and I would appreciate any help or advice on chronic kidney failure.
This is about my mom and I am trying to do what I can for her. Her GFR has went down to 17 from 23. Does anyone know if there any supplements/vitamins, foods anything that can help manage this better. I appreciate any information. Thank you.

@gingerw thank you Ginger! I worked with a nutritionist since 2022 when my kidneys were still functioning (stage 3a), then i got lupus (2024) and lupus found "fruitful" terrain, since then dialysis....
The learning journey goes on.....
I am thankful to have the possibility for dialysis, I live in Italy, in some places on our planet dialysis is no option....
Happy for you that you could reintroduce your loved potatoes, a good thing is to eat them once or twice a week.... an interesting lesson I learned is to balance as much as possible potassium-rich foods with the potassium-poor ones.
Ciao Ginger! Good Life!

@esseline1 Lupus nephritis is a very real complication of systemic Lupus. I was diagnosed with SLE in 1988, but they never were able to connect my kidney disease to it. Fortunately the Lupus is considered mild. Instead, my kidney disease is the result of deposits of Type III collagen into the filtering components of my kidneys. Things fluctuate all the time.

@gingerw good for you that your lupus SLE is considered mild.
I had to look up what deposits of type III collagen mean. Understand that you can support your kidneys by keeping to the diet rules. Right? Or are you on any kind of medication?
Lupus nephritis, as you say, is a very real complication of Lupus SLE. All the same I am quite relaxed about it. Meditation, Qigong, Sound Healing are my little helpers. Life is full of surprises and we must go with the flow....

@esseline1 I have been on peritoneal dialysis for over 4 years now. I still follow a renal diet, and "eat for the numbers" as many of us kidney patients do! Yes, minimizing stress, getting moderate exercise, and restful sleep are all great ways to deal with any chronic illness. Great to hear that you are doing this. I also write to my kidneys and other health concerns I deal with, as part of my journalinga!

@reemylove
I am also 3b and all they say is watch your salt,drink water all day and watch your sugar intake but that is ok but I think doctor's should stay on top of your labs,medications, and not just prescribe medicines randomly. Everyone is different

@gingerw "eat for the numbers" I hadn't heard thisnone before.... haha but very true, we're trying to maintain the numbers in balance, all the time.
Sounds interesting to have a journaling and write to your kidneys and other health concerns. That is something I'd love to copy you on and I will
Thank you!
