New to CKD: Looking for advice
I am new to all of this and I would appreciate any help or advice on chronic kidney failure.
This is about my mom and I am trying to do what I can for her. Her GFR has went down to 17 from 23. Does anyone know if there any supplements/vitamins, foods anything that can help manage this better. I appreciate any information. Thank you.

@bward200158 Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! Your mom is a lucky lady, to have you looking out for her now. Thank you for doing that.
Please take your time to look through the different discussions here in this support group. As you will discover, diet can play a big part in helping to stabilize our declining kidney function. Another thing, is to understand why your mom's kidney function is declining. Are there diabetes or high blood pressure issues involved? Have those been addressed?
How is your mom doing now, and how are you doing?

Thank you for replying to my message. I am trying to do my best for her. Yes, she has diabetes and high blood pressure. They finally put her on the Mounjar shot and it seems to help some. She has been on it about 5 weeks now, I am doing okay just worried about her. She is doing okay considering everything she got going on. I appreciate all the information I can get. We went and saw a diabetic nutritionist and I felt like we didn’t the answers we were looking for there. Would a nutritionist be better than a diabetic nutritionist or they about the same? I am thinking about getting an appointment with nutritionist.
Thank you.
@bward200158 plant protein is easier on kidneys than animal protein. Use a kidney dietician that will review all her lab work. There is no one size fits all.

3B kidney what is the next step in not progressing
Diet is key! A nutritionist can help you to understand which vegs/fruits/dairy you should avoid. Our kidneys at this stage have difficulty to filter potassium, fluor, uric acid, sodium. E.g.potatoes are rich in potassium and need to be peeled and soaked before cooking and the first cooking water eliminated and then cooked again. This is just one example.
Apples and pears and blue berries ans strawberries contain low percentage of potassium.
Zucchini, peppers, onions contain acceptable levels of potassium.
Most cheese is rich in fluor.
Egg yolk is rich in potassium , egg white is OK for the kidneys.
I am a vegan since many years and according to my dietician this is the ideal diet
The art is to balance your meals so that the intake of those elements that are difficult for the kidneys to filter, remain within the allowed levels.
Good life!
@esseline1 Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! You have done the research needed for you and your situation, which I applaud. You're absolutely correct, it takes patience and a lot of thought, to find the right-for-me eating plan.
For me, for many years I stayed away from potassium-rich foods, and really mourned my favorite of potatoes. Then my potassium levels changed, and I was allowed to reintroduce them to my eating plan, in addition to actual supplements. Now it is back to being able to eat potatoes, again, Yeah!
I see you are on dialysis twice a week. How are you feeling with that protocol?

1 Reaction@gingerw thank you Ginger! I worked with a nutritionist since 2022 when my kidneys were still functioning (stage 3a), then i got lupus (2024) and lupus found "fruitful" terrain, since then dialysis....
The learning journey goes on.....
I am thankful to have the possibility for dialysis, I live in Italy, in some places on our planet dialysis is no option....
Happy for you that you could reintroduce your loved potatoes, a good thing is to eat them once or twice a week.... an interesting lesson I learned is to balance as much as possible potassium-rich foods with the potassium-poor ones.
Ciao Ginger! Good Life!
