Just found out I have COPD and I'm pretty freaked out
Hi, I just found out today that I have COPD and I'm pretty freaked out. The pulmonologist said I have moderate COPD and a little asthma. I went to the pulmonologist because they found a lung nodule during a CT scan for another issue. I had a PET scan and they said the nodule wasn't cancerous. Anyway, the pulmonologist had me do a breathing test in June and I just had my follow up appointment for that today and she told me I have COPD. She said it doesn't get better only gets worse but can be managed with medication she prescribed an inhaler. I just want to know if there's anyone on here who has had COPD for a long time, what things other than meds have helped you cope with it ? I'm just trying to get a handle on this and not be so scared.

@tjphillipp Musinex 12 hour relief. As needed!
@jerdonus is it a pill or liquid?
I was diagnosed 7 years ago. I take Trelegy and was Judy started in Outovare, Formoterol and Budesonide as nebulizer treatments. I’m staying positive. Try and keep away from all fumes. Especially cleaning supplies. There are some good breathing exercises on you tube and also in some of the posts in the COPD support group. Be well!

Pill!
Don’t panic, whatever you do! COPD is a slow progression for most people. I was diagnosed in my late 40’s (around 2004) with mild COPD. Unfortunately, I didn’t take it seriously and continued to smoke until I was 64. I’m now 71 and managing with oxygen. I went on oxygen at nighttime in 2017 and in 2024 I had an exacerbation that put me in the hospital for 2 nights. That is when I went on oxygen 24/7. I have Emphysema and it is now considered severe. Keeping active is your best medicine. I have a walking pad and use it at least 4-5 days a week. I do stretching, breathing exercises, and about 10-15 minutes of various exercises during the day. I also have Severe Spinal Stenosis so when that flares, I need to ease up on exercising. I take no medications for my COPD other an inhaler called Stiloto Respimat. 2 puffs every morning. I stay active, I travel, dine out with friends and family and continue to enjoy life. You got this. Easy breathing!

3 ReactionsI’ve used mucinex. Pill form. I think it was another site that someone suggested I buy guaifenesin which is the major ingredient of mucinex. I found some at Target called Mucus Relief DM . It has precisely the same ingredients as mucinex, 600 mg guaifenesin 30 mg dextromethorphan .it was less than 1/4 the price of mucinex. I saw it also listed on amazon. I haven’t tried it yet. Fortunately haven’t had to. I keep it in my travel bag for emergency if needed.

1 ReactionI have Emphysema, COPD and asthma. I smoked almost 50 years. Pulmonary doc and many of my about 10 specialist and my primary have told me most people have nodes or nodules. I have them on my thyroid also. I am using mullein now in my nebulizer instead of steroids. I pray. I've decided to take my health in my own hands. Ask your doc how big the nodes are. Ask anyone with medical knowledge about what nodes or nodules are. Take deep breaths and educate yourself. I'm 69 and eliminating pills, educating myself. You will have to advocate for yourself. Good luck I wish you much success.

1 ReactionI believe also that exercise is the key...and probably nebulising hypertonic saline/airway clearance for mucus clearance, although I have reduced that lately because i seemed to be in a reactive airways loop.
I was diagnosed with Bronchiectasis and small airway disease over 10 years ago and recently the small airway disease was termed at Moderate/Mild COPD. I was prescribed a LAMA/LABA inhaler which kept me awake at night, so I dropped that...was then given Spiriva...however I have not taken it regularly, partly because of (maybe unreasonable) fear of side effects, and because I generally now don't feel the need.
However, I am wondering if I am causing potential damage or progression by not taking the inhalers. What do people think? I have taken many over the years and Symbicort for years without any apparent effect, Spiriva for a couple of years but stopped because of my concern for the drying of mucus and potential for plugging. Didn't notice too much difference off it.
