Pain medication changes due to regulations

Posted by cmedina1 @cmedina1, Sep 4 10:03am

I’ve been told twice now by my current doctor that they have to lower my pain medication because they’re being forced to by the government. I myself have lowered my medication twice to cut it in half. I’ve been on this medication for 26 years. I’ve tried to lower it again, but life as you know it changes so quick that I was not able to take care of myself. Now I’m in this position where they will have to lower it. I’m just wondering if anybody else out there has been told the same . Thanks for any input you may have.

Are you under the care of a pain management specialist or a pc?
A pain management doc can help you a lot more than a primary care doc.
I was denied my meds for about 2 years and it was just awful.
I am seeing a great rheumatologist now and the monthly injections of Cimzia I get in her office for RA are so helpful. I also take a muscle relaxer and an opioid 3 times a day. It is all working together now and my pain levels are manageable.

Good luck on your pain management journey.

I am under care of pain management. This is coming from that doctor. This will be the 3rd time trying to get it down lower.

🤔 Seems odd? One thing is to have your doctor submit to your insurance the need for this medication. You have a track record of having it for 26 years and it working to keep you from being as they say disabled. I know for myself that if the doctor wants you to have this that their is a code that they sent to the insurance company that says something about the doctor says you need to have this medication. It just seems odd that they say you can’t have a certain amount of pills. The hardest part about having Fibro is having to fight these silly battles that you don’t have the energy for. I’m on Medicare and them right now sending the refusal to cover the Tonmya. I just sent it off two days ago, so I will let people know how that worked. The other question to the doctor would be, and really play this up, to get up in the morning and have a day. What else do you suggest to keep my pain lower and still be able to function with my daily living skills. I want to emphasize the word adult daily living skills, which is what they use for saying that you can’t do the things like getting up getting dressed, making dinner doing your laundry, etc. I think doctors are always trying to keep our medication low and they really can only respond to how we respond to them. So the last time when my doctor was reluctant and pushed back two times during our appointment, I just started crying. That did it. She seem to think that that was sufficient to know that I was in pain. I do have a husband who helps me with some of these things and props me up to complete them. I don’t know if you have a partner or siblings who can help out, but if they do ask. The hardest thing for all of us to do is ask. Good luck.

I also had to cut my benzodiazepine and half and literally get rid of my muscle relaxers. This is on top of now wanting to cut my medication again so thank you for your concern and your reply. I truly appreciate it. Best of luck to you.

@cmedina1 May I ask which muscle relaxer you were taking? I know when I was taking Soma years and years ago after having spinal fusion surgery, it was a very 'regulated' medication. I now take Robaxin, and never had a problem getting it. Maybe ask your doctor for that to at least try it to see if it works for you...good luck!

Robaxin is still OTC in Canada! We’re being monitored more closely with Opioids and Benzodiazepines, it’s under the heading Controlled Substance. My previous Medical Practitioner was a cruel person towards the end of his career, he would play with my medication by reducing the next prescription without saying anything, if the cancer came back he’d increase the amount and afterwards he’d lower it again, it was a very stressful situation to cope with, ironically he was the one who put me on Ativan!

I had spinal fusion surgery in 2012, resulting in 2 rods & 20 screws. The surgeon told my husband that I would need pain meds for the rest of my life. I was 63 at the time & didn’t realize how pain would change my life. We retired & moved from Calif. to Az. 2 yrs later, only having to move again after 2 yrs. when I couldn’t find a doctor who would see me! My family doctor in LA was the only doctor who would help me, so I ended up flying to LA every month to see him & pick up my pain prescriptions. Finally, in 2024, I was able to see a pain management doctor here in Nevada. The first thing he did was lower my medication! Not because I didn’t need it, but because of some arbitrary number the government came up with! I am now almost 77, & know this is now my life, in pain all the time. I hope all of those highly educated people who created this situation are happy.

I never dealt with anybody in Canada before for a pharmacy. Is there any chance that you could recommend one for me? I’m not sure if we’re allowed to do that or not on this thread, but it doesn’t hurt to ask thank you.

@cmedina1 I don’t know if there’s any law prohibiting me from giving you the names of pharmacies in Canada, the one that comes to mind in Ontario is Shoppers Drug Mart, they’re a huge corporation owned by Loblaws which is a grocery store chain. I haven’t a clue how this would help you in the USA, everything is so strict today when it comes to medications, perhaps you could research it to see what’s best for you.
