SVT and perimenopause

I've had SVT for 10+ years. I used to only have an episode once or twice a year. My heart would go over range from 180-235. I have not found any success in stopping it at home and have always ended up in the ER. I have now had 3 episodes in 4 months. This morning I noticed that is has been 113 days since I've had a period. Coincidence I'm not sure? I'm in Alaska so I feel that my care is limited. There are only 4 EP in the whole state. They are suggesting an ablation and am wondering if this is my best choice based on possibly caused by hormones. Also I've had friends struggle with hormone replacement therapy during perimenopause. Anyone else have increase in SVT at this stage in life? Treatment options? Thanks in advance.

@mitchellynn Your best bet is an ablation. The sooner the better. Drugs can work, but they have other side effects, some quite objectionable or just intolerable. An ablation stops the rogue firing cells, or the re-entrant from transmitting or relaying signals that make your heart's upper chambers beat rapidly. Ablations for SVT are usually highly successful.

@mitchellynn I am 48 years old and have SVT episodes since around the age of 20 but they had been getting more frequent the last few years (from maybe once every 1-2 months to sometimes weekly palpitation episodes). I did wonder if the increase in frequency could be hormone (menopause) related but none of the doctors I saw mentioned this to me.

Anyhow, last Friday I had an EPS where they diagnosed AVNRT and an ablation procedure was performed at St. Barts Hospital in London. Only time will tell if this has worked (they were not certain they got it all as the area affected seemed to be quite large and near my natural pacemaker so they had to abandon any further attempts in the end).

I never had any medication for it so cannot comment on that (they almost always stopped when I lay down until April when I had to stop running London Marathon and the palpitations continued for hours - hence being referred for the ablation).

Let me know if you have any questions about the actual procedure. It is all pretty fresh in my mind right now!

Good Luck in whatever you decide.
