Conflicting between two specialist doctors sat to pseudonyms treatmen
My lung specialist advised I would be having a two week IV treatment (cyprofloxin) for my newly discovered pseudomonas. I was also referred to an infectious disease doctor that suggested not treating me. Even though only a scant was found he didn’t want to treat me as fear of antibiotic resistance. He also didn’t think it would do anything so was questioning my lung specialist. He would only treat me if I was feeling unwell. I haven’t felt great since I was diagnosed ones with MAC 2 years go and that is now gone.
Has anyone else had this happen to them and what was the outcome?

My sputum test showed” a few pseudomonas cells”, and my NYU Dr felt it was best to treat it fast before it colonized. I have been on a series of different drugs, each for a period of time. My last sputum sample showed no pseudomonas. I am currently off meds and feeling well. I just gave another sample and we will see what that shows.

Thats great news, my pulmonologist may still over ride the hospital infectious disease dr. as my results only showed a scant and was not anti biotic resistant at all from 16 months of the Big 3 and it did get rid of the MAC. I was to be treated with cyprofloxin as this is known to treat mild pseudomonas. Infectious disease specialist suggested inhaled tobramycin or aztreonam instead. Will see what the outcome is when I go back to my pulmonologist in a few weeks.

1 ReactionI would just suggest that you be careful with Pseudomonas as there is a possibility it can colonize (which is what happened to me). It rears its ugly head now and again and I end up with Cefepime infusions for several weeks to tamp it down. Then I continue to nebulize Colistimethate twice daily as a maintenance measure. 2 ReactionsI just completed a 7 day course of Levofloxin, (750 mg/day) for Pseudomonas, (less than 10,000 colonies) found in Broncoscopy sputum earlier this month.
Pulmonologist wanted me to knock this out now as preliminary findings show Mycobacterium Chimaera Intracellulare for which I will certainly have to start "big 3" antibiotics soon. Pseudomonas caused me to bring up thick yellow sputum daily and I was short of breath. I am feeling much better already!

When your drs called your pseudomonas as scant or mild, did they indicate any numbers such as 1+ or 2+ etc?
Yes he did it was a 1+ if I read report correctly. Interesting update as pulmonologist called me in a Saturday morning and going to over rule the infectious disease dr. As does not agree. I will be going in a two week oral cyprofloxen and probably 3 month nubulized antibiotic (tobramycin) because bronchioscope and sputum showed no resistance to 4 or 5 antibiotics he wants to eradicate this now before it gets worse. I am actually happy we are going this direction so why wait until I get sick (er) or it gets worse. Because I also have bronchiactasis he feels this will improve those symptoms.

4 Reactions@clk1958 one 28 days course of Tobramycin (TOBI) appears to have zapped it for me. Interesting the different “courses” rx’s by a variety of pulmonologists take illustrates we all are different too. My pulmonologist recommended a month in between TOBI doses and a sputum test a couple of weeks into that time off to see if it was still in there.
Interesting to hear the difference in how our pulmonologist treat us but I like that you got it as I am hoping same. Can handle the 14 day cyprofloxen hopefully, then on the inhaler for 3 months.
My pseudomonas have been treated for 16 years and it's become resistant to all oral meds.
What do you do then? This is my first strain so hoping to eradicate but I am aware it can come back.
