Has anyone had a HIPEC procedure?

Posted by gsterle @gsterle, Dec 21, 2025

I was diagnosed with ACINAR pancreatic cancer in September 2023 I had a distal, pancreatectomy, and splenectomy and unfortunately, I had metastases to the liver. Chemo treatments shrank the liver tumors however I have spread to my peritoneal lining in my stomach. Is HIPEC an option? As I am running out of chemotherapy

@marymichaels were you able to do HIPEC then? It’s being offered for my mom (outside of a clinical trial setting) and we’re trying to decide. Curious if you went through it.

@jwg19822005 Hi- My wife, @marymichaels, will probably respond, but she's out of town for a few days. I can tell you that she had the HIPEC procedures through the Mayo trial in January & February and things went very well. Between the HIPEC and her previous radiation and chemo, along with her very positive attitude, she's been doing very well since then. The tumor has shrunk and there's currently no sign of active cancer. Her energy and appetite are rebounding, too. She'll have scans every three months, and we are feeling very positive about things. Best of luck to you and your mother!

Yes! I completed the 2 surgeries in February of this year. I’ve had 2 scans since then-both NED. I’m feeling great.
The recovery went well with no hiccups-but I was prepared (lots of rest, exercise, positive thinking)
I’m curious why this (possible) surgery for your mom would be considered outside of the trial(?). Perhaps she doesn’t qualify?

@marymichaels I am so glad to hear that! That’s such great news, especially after all the treatment you have done. I hope you are celebrating!

We would love to do HIPEC in a clinical trial setting, but we live pretty far from Mayo. My mom‘s surgeon does a lot of HIPEC and is very up on current research that shows good outcomes in limited volume peritoneal metastasis, so he think she would be a good candidate. He also says tumor biology has a huge impact on the success rates and she has had very indolent tumor behavior so far, which he says usually leads to more favorable outcomes with HIPEC. She was initially diagnosed six years ago and had pancreatectomy at that time and adjuvant chemo, than an ovarian recurrence in 2024, which was removed and more chemo, has been off treatment for over a year and just now found one peritoneal nodule on PET scan. So, that is what has brought us to this point. She feels great, is a very fit and active 70-year-old and would like to do whatever is going to beat this back again for as long as possible.

I was reading about the mayo trial and it looks like clinical trial participants can have multiple rounds of HIPEC if needed? Is the plan just to do routine scans and repeat HIPEC if anything else would show up? Praying it never does for you!

@johnjohnny that is so awesome to hear. May she have many many more years of clear scans! Thanks for that positive feedback.

The trial involved 2 HIPEC rounds.
Any additional HIPEC treatments would be outside of the trial, which thankfully I haven’t needed and haven’t been suggested.
Time will tell but I am hopeful that the 2 HIPEC surgeries zapped the tumor and peritoneal cancer cells.

I am currently in the HIPEC trial. I am fortunate in that I live relatively close to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. I had six months of what was termed as "agressive" chemotherapy. The results from that were VERY good. I am now in the radiation phase which is three weeks of daily radiation (5 days a week). My last CA-19 was at 23. The blood test for that was last week.

I will be doing a laproscopy next month followed by the main surgery in mid-October. Again, so far so good.

This is great news. If you would like to connect about the HIPEC surgery and what comes next, please let me know. It has been 6 months since my open HIPEC, and I'm feeling better than I have in a very long time.

This is such a small trial, and I've been looking for someone who also had this surgery--there are not many of us.

@bradyb that is awesome! I’m guessing they are doing radiation to the pancreatic tumor, not the peritoneal mets? So great to hear you are doing well.

@marymichaels Thanks again for the encouragement and positive words! Mom is scheduled for CRS/HIPEC at 8AM tomorrow. She’s ready to get it over with and also nervous! You probably felt the same. Best to you and hope you’re still doing well.
