Have you taken levetiracetam (Keppra)?

Posted by Ryman @ryman, Aug 29, 2017

I have been prescribed Keppra for seizures. I have never actually had a seizure but the neurologist says that some of the weird things going on with me are related to seizures. I really don't get on well with meds and am concerned about this one. Has anyone else taken it? Thank you.

Hi, @shakyone7 - I wanted to add my welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Glad to hear the levetiracetam (Keppra) has helped some with the memory issues.

What kind of mood issues have you noted with the levetiracetam (Keppra)?

Keppra can worsen depression and like you know cause mood issues like irritability, anxiety and aggression. Are you having any coordination troubles or drowsiness?
Does the Keppra control the seizures? Do you take any other seizure meds?
Take care,
Jake

Hi. I'm new here.
I've been on Keppra about 2 months now.
First side effect I noticed is the SENSE of hyperventilation, and racing heart. Comes, and goes, but happens quickly after dosing.
500mg, twice a day.
Mood changes are a HUGE factor, I find.
Not because of the medication, necessarily.
The after effects from the SIEZURES are horrific! COUNSELING SHOULD BE OFFERED FOR FREE. The changes in MY life have been SCARY. Seems VERY hard to be taken seriously.
"You've got meds coming out your ears. What do you want...?"
"You look fine!"
"The NEW You!"
Screw all o that! I needed/need help.
Explanations, answers, ANTICIPATED NEEDS.
I know, you folks know what I'm talking about.

So my son was on it as well, same dose & awful side effects. After 2 months, we switched to trileptal and it was a god send. He has focal seizures, so not sure about you. It is not a way to live, talk to your neurologist about options or get 2nd opinion.

You are not alone! Until the seizures were found,I was having auras, memory was a huge problem, cognitive decline, my family just thought I was bipolar until the 48hr Eeg showed seizures were still ongoing...I was scared because the ER just classified me as a Psych case...all the way up to my grand mal seizures!!! Then everyone was like “oh we’re sorry we didn’t know” approximately 5 doctors had NO CLUE! P.s. I am a disabled nurse...go figure!!!

i had taken tegretol for 15 years without much problems. I had to give up tegretoal due to bone density related issues. I was then perscribed KEPPRA as a replacement seizure control med. I was on Keppra for 8 weeks ad around week 6 I started to notice a change in my mood and experienced anxiety I have never had previously. The anxiety consumed me and finally doc switched me to Oxcarbazepine. Oxcarb depleted my blood sodium levels and I had to be admitted to hosp for IV therapy to bring my sodium back to accaptable level. I am now taking Vimpatt. I had not heard of VIMPATT and do not see it mentioned anywhere.
Hope this sheds some awareness on KEPPRA.
Is there anyone out there who has taken VIMPATT and can share their experience with that med?

Hi ... responding to you about Vimpat . My 18 year old daughter started having seizures in April. The doctor started her on Keppra and her mood changed and she was not herself . She actually started having partial seizures and he put her on Vimpat . She is as close to herself as I have seen since this whole crazy mystery started
By has had a few episodes . She is in college st Baylor and I am in NC so I worry constantly . Anyway, if keppra affected
You the same as her , then maybe this will also ... good luck and hope it works for you .

I have been on Keppra for about two years. Because I still have had a few mild seizures, my neurologist has upped the dose gradually. My major side effect is a worsening of my depression. I know that this is a possible side effect and if you are prone to depression, either take the lowest possible dose or try something else. My psychopharmacologist and neurologist tried me on Lamictal (sic?) but I had a major reaction to it and was hospitalized.

I will note that other than the above conditions, I am a reasonably healthy and fit 77 year-old and I don't know how much of my negative reaction is exacerbated by aging.

@jdernburg - is your treatment for depression (if you've been getting treatment for it, that is) being altered to help with the side effects from the levetiracetam (Keppra)?
